Chtonic Fatigue Syndrome
Just checking I wasn't the earnest lamb among the irony wolves (too tired for a more original metaphor).

Never heard a Quincy Jones' production I didn't like, and those 80s Ashford and Simpson hits (Solid etc.)...fucking hell, perfect poise between dancefloor and yacht-deck.

But "Caribbean Queen"...well, I'm sure someone more blog-minded than me could spin those lyrics out into a heartfelt refusal of yuppie selfishness and conquest sexuality (no more love on the run....), and the "African Queen" version probably has some nice racial implications you could run with.
Get on it, blogosphere!

The album that came off of "The Dude" is also about 60% high quality, the rest sappy balads.

But yes, Quincy is the man. Check Body Heat and Smackwater Jack among his other solo albums.

Which reminds me, I still need to listen to that Patti Austin album I got months ago, the one he produced in the mid 80s.

This video has, I must warn you, yacht-kids. If you want a UK version of this, head to Devon. It's like this down there.

If we consider Eric Clapton's 1989 album Journeyman, we may recognise the peak of yacht-blues.

What the hell's with that "Insy Binsy Spider" bit in that Carly Simon track? Bit of a shocker. Is that one of the ones Chic wrote?

There's a fair dose of contemporary stuff that could surely be considered neu-yacht. Anyone interested or is this about tucking into the oldies? As it were.

a whole set of this kind of thing would go down a treat on an actual yacht gig:

Except no one in their right mind is ever going to let me near their yacht.

I smell poor, I swear.

Doesn't matter how much 70% off Perry Ellis I wear I still work in a factory.

Check for Alphonso Johnson's Stump on his album Moonshadow.

I need to rip it and post it up here.

true , from fuzztone-Cream-jazz into easy listening , what a career .

yacht-blues started more or less with the comeback of lsd-wrecked Peter Green in 1979 .

@ topic

Narada Michael Walden , who used to show up as super-virtuoso-animal-drummer on Mahavishnu Orchestra's self-indulgent albums "Apocalypse" and "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" , became then sort of smart yacht-disco-composer on his solo productions and succeeded .

No way! I was just looking up Mbilia Bel earlier today. Great, great stuff...

Steely Dan - Absolutely untouchable: Deacon Blues, Glamour Profession, The Fez (hell, the entirety of the Royal Scam lp for that matter)... top respect for this stuff, grew up loving it... not even a hint of irony there for me.

I nominate mid-period Deodato as well:

I can't find the awesome Keep On Movin' track on youtube, but that's the one I really had in mind...

And of course Dexter Wansel:

Wow, I had no idea this guy went on to do all that pop production. Crazy.

Re: Deodato, I've got something like 7 of his LPs, each about 50c from dodgy Salvation Army op shops or whatever, and have to say they're generally absolutely hideous. Well, he commits a lot of the sins the kind of smooth, jazz-funk end of things gets accused of on a regular basis.
