back on topic it occurred to me today the the new towers in the city are obvious examples of graphic design architecture over the classical dreams of wren churches and the bank and exchange.
its like back in wren times, they were creating art in the face of all these practical difficulties building with stone and wood, whereas recent architects have the luxury/blight of being able to make all sorts of wild shapes.
design surely is about ergonomics and utility, and it will use aesthetic pleasure solely as a means to an end - improving usability? although there's a lot of cultism in design like trying to imbue the inherently shallow discipline with meaning. art on the other hand is bourgeois fun, basically from which higher truths might occasionally be secreted
