I was speaking to a friend about cancel culture etc earlier and he said he can't stand the right's manipulation of it, but that it is very real. He went through an NY liberal arts program and said he saw people shouting "Unlearn that! Unlearn that!" in other people's faces and all sorts. Said it was just as extreme and lacking in nuance as the Trump fanatics yelling about fake news.

Yes, the people on the right and the left are all the same. If there is a shared dedication among political animals it is against nuance, against inconvenient realities, and in favor of hysteria, rhetorical overstatement, exaggeration. I believe Dissensus used to be more academic left way back in the early days, back when there were a lot more post-grad types

i.e. supporting the Iraq War would've been/was a truly heretical position

that was well before my time tho, you'd have to ask luke or craner or john eden etc about it

they do and they don't. they have the power to pick their people.

I wasn't disappointed by Obama because I always thought he was a centrist technocrat with charisma and that's what he turned out to be

well we've never had much sensible politics here. we've had k-punk telling us to admire north korea. we've had gek-opel calling on us to immanentise the eschaton. you know, mostly nutters. but there's always been a right wing contingent. you can see it in the early threads about capitalism and so on where people like josef k would kick back against Fisher and co.
