TBF tho, that Oskar Schindler was a bit of a virtue-signalling cunt, when you think about it.

Nowhere. Wherever they are is frightening and unacceptable. Was not raising a question as to the validity or rescuing and placing or not. Was dealing with the politics of the photo and hierarchies of hypocrisy I suppose

Refugees who are trying to get to the UK from Afghanistan clearly think they'll be better off here than they are there, and I'd tend to agree with them. It's got fuck all to do with being a "white saviour racist", whatever that is, and a lot to do with where you're less likely to get beheaded.

From Cipher Brief:

PUTIN'S CALCULATED AFGHANISTAN PLAY -- "It is highly likely there was practical cooperation between the Kremlin and the Taliban in the preparation for the American withdrawal and this may have included direct support to Taliban forces," writes Cipher Brief Expert and former senior CIA Officer Robert Dannenberg in today's Cipher Brief.
  • "...the evidence of Russian energetic engagement with the Taliban in recent months is manifest and the fact the Russian embassy in Kabul is currently protected by Taliban fighters is significant."
  • "For both Russia and the Taliban there was a clear shared strategic objective: Get the Americans and their allies out of Afghanistan and ideally in the most humiliating fashion possible."

"Biden Urged Afghanistan Withdrawal Despite Advisors’ Warnings. President Joe Biden was reportedly committed to withdrawing US forces from Afghanistan despite concerns from senior military, intelligence and diplomatic officials. Before he ordered the withdrawal, top generals warned him security was deteriorating in Afghanistan and urged him to keep some forces in the country while seeking a peace deal between the warring Afghan factions given the instability. Other advisors expressed concerns over possible Taliban attacks on both US forces and diplomats and Afghans who had supported them. In the end, Biden said the US was simply providing life support for the government in Kabul and wished to reorient focus to other areas such as competition with China, infrastructure and dealing with Covid-19. Wall Street Journal"

The life support metaphor lines up with my understanding of affairs, from what info I've been exposed to. Too exogenous a solution for a problem that seems to need more of a radically authentic one.

U.S. Freezes $9.5 Billion in Afghan Central Bank Assets. The US has frozen nearly $9.5 billion in assets belonging to Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB), the Afghan central bank, and suspended shipments of dollars to Afghanistan to block the Taliban’s access to these funds. Despite the Taliban’s takeover, the group remains on the Treasury Department’s sanction designation list. The International Monetary Fund likewise said it may withhold its $450 million loan to DAB given “lack of clarity” over “recognition of a government in Afghanistan.” Al Jazeera Bloomberg BBC New York Times

Thanks for the heads up, but I have actually heard of the phrase. Quite often from smug edgelord nihilists, as it happens.
That’s great - then discussion of the photograph and its positioning in these terms and not some unrelated stay get beheaded or go get saved scenario might be undertaken as was initial intention. Or not. Posturing is boring.
