Not really me but was impressed by my friends' intoxication on Saturday. I went to watch my friend's girlfriend play drums somewhere. My friend picked me up in his car and he was really struggling to put together a sentence - possibly should have been a warning sign type thing maybe - but anyway, I get in and off we go. Over the course of the evening I piece together the following details - basically my friend does a "job" which I don't really understand but it involves hanging around municipal offices and meeting immigrants and then hooking them up with lawyers and such who help them get documents that they need to live in Portugal and join the economy etc. Lately it has apparently become very lucrative and he can earn over a thousand euros a day when he works and he is taking home up to 15k a month. Now this job is illegal and he pays no tax or anything so he doesn't like to pay the money into his bank account or allow there to be any official record of it, in fact, he decided that the most sensible thing to do was to spend it all on cocaine. As he's driving down the motorway at a steady 200km/h driving right up the arse of anyone who doesn't immediately shift out of the way I realise that apart from a few snatched hours on Friday he hasn't slept since Tuesday. As he drives he passes me the bag and gets me chopping 'em out for him, so that by the time we get to the gig - actually the annual festival of a tiny little village it turns out - he's smashed another gram, one of six I think that vanish over the course of the evening.
We watch the gig which is kinda weird. His girlfriend is the drummer in a girl garage band but she also plays as, I suppose, an employee for this bloke who is playing tonight and i think is a pretty big deal. He's basically a solo artist who writes all the songs and then auditions for musicians to tour with him and play as session musicians on the album. She auditioned and at the moment she is his drummer. Anyway, despite the fact that the village has maybe twenty houses the stage is about the size of the main one at glastonbury and the crowd is pretty large. They play a competent but fairly boring and extremely long set to a couple of thousand non-plussed locals, while we keep returning to the "powder mobile" to ensure we're topped up. After the gig we help her pack up her drum kit while the dj plays a bizarre selection including happy hardcore versions of traditional Portuguese folk songs, the Spice Girls and - mystifyingly - All I Want For Christmas is You by Mariah Carey.
Once the drums are in the van we head back to Lisbon - turns out she hasn't slept since Tues either - stopping at every single service station on the way. And then he drops me off at home. We spend a final hour in the powder mobile before they head off on their merry way to really get the weekend started, I retire to bed and hope I can get some kip before my birthday on Sunday.
