i've listened to samples of 'defender' and i can't wait to hear it properly. every new release he puts out seems to be more awesome than the previous one. not many musicians can do that after 20 years of making music.

Jokes. He is known 'as the man from tomorow' for a reason. I hope one day he will remake the Close Encounters OST. Those few tones are right what he talks about in the post above.

Contact Special is the one to get. Seriously. Metropolis is excellent too, though I guess that's around ten years old now.

I'd recommend the Exhibitionist DVD very much, it's enormous fun and very interesting. I'm not sure you'd want to watch it more than once though. Watch it on YouTube basically!

I always wondered whether the twitching of his fingers was a deliberate affectation. I've come to the opinion that it's not, there's something compulsive about it, I think this kind of precise attention to detail, and the idea that he can always improve a track minutely, is an integral part of his philosophy.

On The Exhibitionist I thought his finger twitching seemed a bit OCD. But looking at this earlier clip you can see it in fuller finer effect. (nabbed from Little Detroit)

It does seem a bit OCD but I think when you are spinning on 3 or 4 channels it actually helps to keep recheck your EQ lines.

I thinking being OCD is just another symptom of a man who is clearly very switched on and deeply obsessed with his chosen discipline. Perhaps if Jeff didn't compulsively twitch over the finest EQ setting several times in the space of a breath, he wouldn't be such a legend.

I have some early Wizard mixes I'll try and find, they are pretty amazing, the cuts and blending had me rewinding to get to grips with how it was done, proper how the fuck moments.

Trying to find them now :) Where did that Jeff Mills text come from that you posted?

from this unedited wire interview.

i thought him making a distinction between "art" and dance music is (unintentionally) ironic... considering he's always been more serious and rigorous in concept as well as form than his peers, pursuing a sound almost diametrically opposed to hedonistic frivolity.

Those Wizzard mixes are amazing. Sometimes quite poppy in places. But sometimes it's the collision of tracks in the mix which is almost more important than the tracks themselves.

My point about OCD isn't that this is something weird or anything like that, I think whoever said it's just a mark of being deeply connected with the music is spot on. Even if there's something obsessive about it, I don't think that's a bad thing at all.

Thank for linking to my Wire interview, hope it's an interesting read.

Yeah I seem to remember one from DHP with loads of hip house, uk chart music D-Mobb, Wee Papa Girl Rappers, Cookie Crew etc and all that mixed with house and techno. Loads of hip style mixing with scratching, spinbacks and cuts.

It's just a mental check externalised, it's a easy habit to get into when mixing. I remember when we switched the bass to kill buttons with LEDs on our controllers, it was a nightmare with 8 channels of audio running live as you couldn't see what was on or off.
