a conceptual dining experience

Tight but Polite
Doesn't actually taste very nice, but raises profound questions regarding what constitutes food and its role in late capitalist society.

The dishes playfully subvert traditional notions of the oppositional chef/diner binary and reject conventional ingredient paradigms. You can't tell what the hell anything is meant to be so each dish is presented with a handy little bit of text that includes phrases like "...invites into a dialogue..." and "...explores the tension between...".

You leave without having frankly the slightest clue what just happened, but having reassured yourself that you've done something pretty highbrow and challenging.

No idea, but as soon as I saw the thread title I let out a silent groan and rolled my eyes.

Whatever it is sounds awful.

maybe they pump the food in via some sort of reverse enema, calling into question the entire concept of 'dining'.

ftr if this is the case I will not be attending.

If that's the case they're behind the curve on this one as South Park did that about ten years ago.

A few years ago I listened with horror as I heard myself say to a friend, "Is Heston Blumenthal the Slavoj Zizek of contemporary cuisine?".

In my defence I was very high at the time.

Starters

Cacao-peanut log - I globally generated epitome of savoury and sweet juxtapositionings, presented without the archaic and inhibitive structures of traditional dining.

Mains

bi-fried, 3-fat pomme-de-terre fragments. A selection of super-soft simplistically constructed carbohydrate morsels presented within in organic and breathable recycled materials. Our unique cooking protocol and insistence upon a deconstructed conveyance reduces this established british staple to it's height.

Desserts

Fruit-Gelatin morsels accompanied with a non-alcoholic caramelised sugar carbonated cocktail. Flavour variants of each FGM can be traced back to particular natural drupes and poly-achenenites by endo-mermorial references alone.

There is a superb chapter in Harry Hill's Flight From Deathrow called 'Dinner at Nobby's' that pretty much fits the bill here. The idea is that it's London's most exclusive new restaurant, with a star-studded waiting list a year long before it's even opened. Diners have to submit a cheek swab beforehand so the kitchen/lab can produce dishes matching their genetic profile; the first course is entirely vaporous and has to be inhaled; the second course consists of live sea turtles that the diners have to catch, kill, butcher and cook themselves, and so on.

When I get home I'll see if I can dig out a few choice passages. Seriously funny shit.

Doesn't the main character in Against Nature by Huysmans start taking his food that way as a final rejection of normality?
Plus it seems some people I know have been taking their pills conceptually for yonks.

Isn't there a Bunuel film where they all sit round a table having a shit then go into little closets to eat in private?

Seems like it does - did he just re-use the scene?

Edit - that was the wrong link there, should have been this

The professor continues, using a dinner party at his friends’ house to illustrate a point he is making. We then cut to the ‘dinner’ party which is being held in a modern bourgeois apartment. The guests are seated around the table on flushing toilets. They politely discuss various issues around the topic of defecation whilst publicly using the toilets that they are sitting on. When a guest is hungry, he excuses himself and retires to the dining room, a private cubicle, to eat food.
