Whatever you do, dont start exploring the social media hinterland of IDF soldiers. This is the tip of a very nasty iceberg.

if that image were released by a pro-palestine organisation it would be praised as a succinct protest against israeli atrocities though. so I'm not sure the image itself is a problem, but the (presumed) attitude of the soldier who disseminated it.

Obviously its not the image itself, but who took it and in what context. Its a problem because :

1. We know the IDF has deliberately targeted children and civilians
2. We know that this attitude towards Palestinians is common in the Israeli mainstream and that members of the IDF have repeatedly produced this kind of material.
3. The fact that these attitudes are so normalised that an IDF soldier thought nothing of uploading this image to social media.

surely it's better that these attitudes are out in the open though? it's clear for everyone to see just how fucked up the IDF are.

Does the photo indicate a horribly fucked-up attitude? Of course it does.
Is it, on balance, a good thing that this photo has come to public attention? Arguably.
Will it make a blind bit of difference to the attitudes and behaviour of the IDF or the Israeli establishment in general? Experience would suggest probably not.

Yeah, you could argue that, and Im not disagreeing, but that doesnt mean its not problematic.

Beast of Burden
I just wonder if the Palestinians had taken the chance to not vote for an anti-semitic theocratic terrorist organisation in 2006, all of this could have been avoided.

...

Three branches of the Entez family, around 60 people, were sheltering in a house in Zeitoun when it was struck with an artillery shell shortly after 8.45pm. Three of the family were killed – Abed Ali, 24, Mohamed Ibrahim, 13, and Mohamed Salem, two – and four injured. Three of the exterior walls were destroyed in the blast.

In the wreckage of the home on Friday morning, Salem Entez, 29, Mohamed Salem's father, approached the Guardian with a plastic bag, which he opened to reveal pieces of flesh he was collecting for burial. "This is my son," he said.

Which they did under no provocation at all from the totally un-terroristic, un-theocratic and not-in-the-least anti-Palestinian Israeli regime?

Come on man, that's fucking lame.

This is just... unbearable. The man was searching for his family in the rubble and was executed by a sniper in front of international witnesses during a period of ceasefire.

i don't think i've ever seen more anti-israel/pro-palestine sentiment here in the states than this time around. maybe it's a feeling that was already there but now just much more enabled by social media. seems like my FB feed is 75% anti-israel, and while the news coverage still tends to give more airtime to israeli talking point, there has been much more coverage than in the past about israeli brutality and some networks/papers are including pro-palestinian pundits on their panels. there was a huge protest in times square calling for israel to stop the bombing, and it was even attended by some jewish groups.

odd times here, has the feel that a corner is turning. americans still overwhelmingly support israel, but there's growing vocal opposition and even traditional supporters have grown weary.
