It sort of reminds me of reading about the birth of rave when supposedly all these football hooligans did ecstacy and were hugging each other rather than bottling each other.

UFC fighters doing mushrooms and communing with the universe.

I mean the anxiety wrt Corpsey is that he is basically primed for radicalisation. He's the number one target. The fattened turkey. Just a few podcasts more and he will be one of them.

What am I being radicalised towards?

Does anyone remember that story about the cage fighter tearing his friend to pieces on mushrooms? I think that must have been a case of a particularly unbalanced individual being pushed over the edge rather than him just snapping because of the trip alone.

A U.S. cage fighter ripped out the heart of his training partner while he was still alive after becoming convinced he was possessed by the devil, it was alleged today.

Jarrod Wyatt also cut out Taylor Powell's tongue and ripped off most of his face in a brutal assault that police said looked like a scene from a horror film, officers said. They claim they found the 26-year-old standing naked over his friend's body with parts, including an eyeball, strewn around the blood splattered room in Klamath, California. Wyatt allegedly told police he had drunk a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms and became convinced Powell was possessed.

According to an autopsy Powell, 21, bled to death after his heart was ripped out. The coroner said Powell had been alive when the organ was ripped out after his chest had been sliced open with a knife. Wyatt told the police he thrown the heart into a fire along with other organs that he had removed from the body, it was claimed. He allegedly told investigators he cooked the body parts because he was fearful Powell was still alive and he ‘needed to stop the Devil’.

Police had been called to the grisly scene after a third friend had witnessed a sudden mood change in Wyatt after they had all ingested wild mushroom tea.

youd imagine people in the developed world experiencing what they may or may not call alienation would be most vulnerable to notions of "really living" being sold to them , perhaps more informed by cultural conditions than a latent urge for destruction. one of the more readily available versions of repackaged "really living" is through some variant of "the artistic life" and so maybe people whose desires fall in line with that are particularly susceptible to this sort of survivalist ideation. as well as the expected demographic of retirees with time on their hands and death looming round the corner.

have met a fair few doomy watch it all burn art students but i mean i wouldnt back their chances too highly if push came to shove.

in the good old days though i had a mate who would say he was very suicidal for a while. he was a window cleaner for a bit and also had a slight fear of heights. i remember him saying that he would catch himself feeling a rush of vertigo up a ladder but then would chastise himself, reminding himself that he spent a lot of time absently hoping for a freak accident to kill him. this actually helped him suppress or transform the vertigo. so a rabid desire for catastrophe might put certain people in some kind of good stead should it arrive.

its commonplace for therapists to say things like, oh well, in some sense arent you attached to feelings of depression etc. so i dont think its too outrageous to suggest something similar here, on a wider societal level wrt catastrophe.

Well there's certainly historical precedent for this, even down to the gory details, in that human sacrifice in the Aztec civilization was always accompanied by ingestion of various entheogens, including psilocybin mushrooms. Which is why I tend to roll my eyes when I hear people say stuff like "There'd be no more war or oppression if we all just did shrooms, maaan."

But yeah, clearly no remotely normal person would do something like this (even assuming they were physically able to) just because they were tripping. There's probably a decade of roid-rage playing a role, and then consider the mentality of someone who chooses to become a cage fighter in the first place.

https://knowledgenuts.com/2013/11/19/the-nude-lsd-therapy-that-made-psychopaths-worse/

Nude therapy began in the 1960s with Paul Bindrim, an American psychologist. In 1967, inspired by nudist camps, Bindrim set up a therapy group at a hotel in California. He charged $100 for people to spend the weekend in a group of participants, during which they would take part in a number of group therapy techniques while completely naked. The idea was that nudity would free people from social constraints and unlock a window into their mind or soul.

These sessions eventually fell out of favor. Morally conservative attitudes meant anything quite that unusual was always going to fall under scrutiny, and people that wished to get together in the buff had nudist camps and the like available. It was benign, however, compared to the version of nude treatment dreamed up in 1968 by Elliot Barker at the Oak Ridge Asylum in Ontario.

Barker got permission from the Canadian government to do trials with LSD. He set up small rooms with bright green walls and called them Total Encounter Capsules. Into those rooms he gathered groups of psychopathic offenders between the ages of 17 and 25. The young men were given LSD and left naked in the rooms for 11 days with no distractions. They were encouraged to scream, claw the walls, and talk about their deepest desires.

If the experience sounds like something that would make someone extra violently insane, that’s because it is exactly that kind of experience. Researchers in the 1990s looked at people who were treated at the facility and compared those that underwent Barker’s therapy with those who didn’t. They found that the re-offending rate had risen from around 60 percent to 80 percent among those that were in the therapy.

It seems that group therapy allows psychopaths to practice manipulating and using people. The attempt to get psychopaths to examine their inner self simply allowed them to figure out how to use their inner self in more destructive ways. It’s also possible, of course, that being locked in a room for over a week with a group of other psychopaths while on hallucinogenic drugs is simply not good for you in any way.

Fucking hell, the shit psychiatrists got away with in those days!

mythology emerged in part from a desire to influence and interact with nature. it dwindled as we developed towns and cities that we increasingly felt sheltered and divorced us from nature.

the reemergence of mythology in our culture is a reflection of nature's revenge. the climate crisis makes us want to be able to communicate with and appease our nature gods once more.

But also our system has become naturalised. The economic cycle. It's good harvests boom times and its market crashes its droughts and crop failures.

lets come back to this,

if people consistently choose X (say, violence), that's not evidence of any kind of desire for X? quite the reverse in fact?

I think that's quite reductive.

Perhaps part of the problem here is the idea that desires are these unified isolated things which lead to specific actions.

Without doubt some violence is a result of people liking, desiring, violence. But why tho.

There was a retrospective on the 81 Brixton riots recently and pretty much everyone, including former coppers, admitted that the riots were a result of the constant racist violence and antagonism against the community by police officers.

Why do women murder their husbands, generally?

Explore daily your deepest desires, fantasies and motives, gradually focusing on what you would like to happen in a perfect world, a perfect situation, taking away all restrictions and practical considerations, what you would really want.

Clean out the trappings and debris of compromise, of what you have been told is reasonable for a person in your circumstances.

Be clear in admitting your real desires. Discard all irrelevancies. Ask yourself who you want as friends, if you need or want to work, what you want to eat. Check and re-check everything deeper and deeper, more and more precisely to get closer and ultimately integrate with your real Self.

Once you are focused on yourself internally, the external aspects ov your life will fall into place. They have to.

There's been a ton of generalisations about 'human nature' and 'desires' here, but can this be described as universal if one demographic commits the majority of violent and destructive acts?

Adolescent males up to the age of about 25 commit the most crime, and the most violent crime. Testosterone is a major contributing factor to war.

There's a theory around this - the 'youth bulge' phenomenon, that suggests that:

"an excess in especially young adult male population predictably leads to social unrest, war and terrorism, as the "third and fourth sons" that find no prestigious positions in their existing societies rationalize their impetus to compete by religion or political ideology."

Well done John. This line of reasoning is the stupidest I've ever seen vim be. You don't look at skyrocketing rates of obesity and deduce a basic human desire to be fat. It's unbelievable.

But droid all you are doing there is moving from positing a universal blood lust onto a young male testosterone based blood lust which is a less canny move. John is thinking more clearly here. Well done John.
