pass the sick bucket
As I said in this thread, this is what scares me. I might at any time, with any listen, cross the invisible threshold, something will click with a terrible finality and I will be an autechre fan.

why does it scare you? what is there to be scared about? make it make sense. explain yourself please.

"For me it's just messing around with a lot of analogue sequencers and drum machines."

Yeah, they are (or became) a wanna be jazz impro outfit. This is not the MO when Mark Fell gets in the studio. Or Wolfgang Voigt. Or Mika Vainio (RIP). The real deal don't 'mess around' or goes into jam mode. They know exactly what they're doing.

there is no jamming in autechre, or at least not the one that is jamming for the sake of jamming. if anything a lot of it is ruthlessly edited down, say quaristice. try richard devine if you want a modular/max msp huxter jamming.

I reject the notion of jamming as a rockist notion anyway. jazzers don't jam, they comp. rock n roll machismo people don't need to learn that skill.

but "ruthlessly edited down" implies there first needed to be lots of improv wanking to wade thru, no?

no, as you will telll if you listen to their live sets, or elseq 1-5 or the nts sessions. it's like saying miles davis was an improv wanker.

the good thing about autechre's post-2010 stuff is they have really abandoned that idea of albums being the ratio of profit to plastic. it has always been a terrible format. especially with 70-80 minute cds. not short enough to fit on a vinyl record, not long enough to be omnipresent and accrue in the subconscious. terrible. kill the album.
