What I find weird and disappointing is that he posts his artworks which are really good, and then all these interesting cutting edge books he's reading... and then he puts up this alt-right meme that is not just something I disagree with but which is something I've seen before like three years ago via someone nowhere near as smart and which is completely lacking in bite or wit or whatever eg the one about how teenagers and young adults now are all snowflakes who cry when they read a bad word, but in the 40s they were real men who liked nothing better than killing nazis and then coming back and making a rape joke but basically they were alright. I mean, go alt-right if you must but at least do it with a bit of style.

Oh god no - Slim Jenkins, aka Robin Tomens. Sim has never posted here, AFAIK.

That is sad. He was one of the first people I ever corresponded with, back in the late 80s via the fanzine he used to do, Ego. He sent me all sorts of crazy bits and pieces through the post, which got me into fanzines, which got me in TOPY, which got me into magic, which got me into therapy.... My life would be a bit different without that string of influences so sad to hear he's gone a bit fruitloop. He did me a fucking amazing tape back in the day which I lost about 25 years ago.

But seriously, I find the stuff he's saying now very surprising and disappointing. It's just such low quality. Seems really out of character. Maybe shouldn't discuss here where he aint gonna read it... but then again fuck it.

It's a well trodden path. What do you think leads people down it? Why does it happen?

It certainly used to be a cliche that people move to the right as they got older but is that true any more? I thought that was linked to increasing wealth, property etc. One of the guys I used to play football with, someone asked him (a few years back) if he was going on the may day march again this year and he said "No mate, I'll be inside the bank protecting it, I've got money in there now" which was at least honest. But I don't get the impression that's the case here - I think he's just trying (badly) to be some kind of agent provocateur.

As Rich says though, it's disappointing almost more for the brainlessness of it than for being right-wing per se. Like if he were quoting Evola and Dugin, that'd be one thing, but he's not, he's just posting lame tired memes that an embarrassing racist uncle might share or videos of Piers Morgan slagging off Extinction Rebellion.

The disappointment that comes with age?

Age was a big part of the Brexit vote. Disappointment obvs as you get older - not inevitable but fairly likely on some level. The gap between the aspirations of someone creative, the ideals you might've held being "on the Left" back then - and the present have got to be huge. That was animated a lot of the Corbyn vote - that sense of "at last!" - lots of ageing lefties flocked back to the fold.

For some people. It happens to the young too though doesn't it. The rejection of liberal pieties, the gleeful embrace of the deplorable. Liberal cant is a part of the equation. The dishonesty and so on.

Of course if you're an artist you're surrounded by lefties so just saying a few right things can kinda feel transgressive I guess, even if they are stupid things.

Yeah, and artists are stupid

I dunno. I'm interested in it though. I think it's gross. Im not sympathetic. But I'm interested in it.

I lurked for a long time, maybe six months, before finally working up the nerve to post. you all seemed like insiders and experts on whatever subject matter was at hand, intimidating from the outside. now, of course, I know better.

I can't remember my first post - other than that it was extremely erudite and groundbreaking - but I do know that it was reading Woebot's top 100 on his blog that led me to Dissensus (and the blog had been recommended by a geek who I used to buy records and watch films with at uni and after but whom I could never persuade to join dissensus). Like Leo I'm pretty sure I read loads of it before diving in and actually saying anything.

I remember from other Forums I used to be a member of the odd forum-custom "farewell thread" when a member fucked off (or wanted to) and announced his (her) departure from said forum? Did this ever happen here also?
