There's probably something about successful writers in the literary fiction genre (not eg Crichton or Dan brown ) that's repulsive in itself. The preening self regard

I hate the spindly, anemic novel style and method that is now the publishing standard, and I always associate (fairly or not) with Ian McEwan.

Novelists are especially prone to this perhaps because novelists aren't supposed to be starry eyed naifs but worldly. And that often equates to something spiritually rotten, spoiled, compromised

it's just retrograde and embaressing. roth is the girly calender on the wall of a tyre fitters in 1989. made sense at the time but best forgotten now.

I know this is a stupid thing to ask, but which Roth novels have you even read?

yes, you know that is a stupid thing to ask.

luka's like Trump. In any other online discussion you'd get eviscerated for not having read the book, but it totally flies here and somehow Craner's the bad guy for asking the sensible question.

😂

I hope I don't offend Craner again by saying will self outfit there is begging to be analysed in the way we were looking at the outfits of the quillette staff.

Will Self: I was reported as 'suspected paedophile' when out with my son

The writer and journalist Will Self has said he was stopped by police while out walking with his son because they suspected he was a paedophile.

The 51-year-old, who also regularly appears on television, was enjoying a long walk with his 11-year-old when a squad car and a police van stopped him on a Yorkshire roadside.

Self, author of Great Apes and The Book of Dave, said he was questioned about what he and the schoolboy were doing out walking together and his details were checked on the police national computer (PNC).

Self, an enthusiastic rambler, and his son set off in July from London to Whitby, North Yorkshire, on their walking holiday.

"No Englishman enjoying a ramble with his son should face examination by police at the roadside on suspicion of being a sexual predator," Self wrote in the Mail on Sunday.

:crylarf:

He hit on a truth though, even if hadn't ever read a word of Roth.

I have a very high tolerance for this sort of thing, and I thought American Pastoral was stunning when I read it, although I would be interested to reread it now.

Having said that, I can't really stomach Updike.

It's notable that gravitas is now unattainable by western man no matter what fancy dress or props you adopt. In fact the clothes intended to signify it only draw attention to its absence.
