Yeah this is true.

Barty I value your explanations and every post.

But most ppl (including, again, ME) aren't pulling their weight.

this is like when i always got away with being naughty at school because i got good grades.

for my gcse coursework we had to write an essay about to kill a mockingbird. mine was only 800 words or somehting and when i handed it in my teacher she was furious with me and scolded me in front of the whole class about how lazy i was. i kept telling her to read it and she just insisted that there was no way 800 words was anywhere near enough.

after the bollocking as the class got back to work she actually started reading it and had to eat humble pie as she said "this is actually very good".

i haven't had a boss or an authority figure in my life for a long, long time now so i don't get to revel in sticking it to the man like i used to.

That Kill a Mockingbird story is great, though. Post the essay, Bart.

Who would you be in TKAMB? I'd be Atticus Finch. Luke would be Boo Radley.

I have read it but I can't remember anything about it. I know vaguely it's about African Americans, maybe in slavery days?

A Franco-Todd flambé delicacy from 1998.

Mid-late 90s is prime Todd time, when his signature was perfected.

at corpse's wedding after he's done all that slow dance rubbish to 'thinking out loud' he puts this on and he, me, luke and brackles will all go ape shit on the dance floor. the full sweaty embrace of the lads.

I thought it was quite good, to be fair. But as Taylor Parkes pointed out, the whole thing was ruined by JT having a face like Arthur Mullard.

Corpsey

I have no idea who that is. JT always struck me as a cornball.

There are a few drippy ones on there and the timbaland stuff is mostly gash (cry me a river excepted).

It was mainly the singles, all instant classics. Neptunes in full pomp.hormonal boys and girls singing the split bit in Senorita.

my party piece millennial revisionist opinion is that wu tang forever is fucking great.

its really immerses you in this 5%er skunk paranoia. it's jarring and claustrophobic. it never fucking ends; weaponised attrition of the system. it's all cctv and medical experiments done on the black population and all that.

there's also this sense that their at the height of their commercial viability and that they can taste the wu revolution. its a real possibility and their so close to attaining it. they're not boys anymore. they're men. no more silliness. no more playfulness. its earnest and pompous.

its in some respects an unpleasant listen, but its a potent one. a grim mindset to occupy, but as a work of art it's amazing.

These are the two for me.

Barty knows this as its a conversation we've had more than once but I've never been as disappointed in my life as when that album came out. The only thing I can compare it to is when my hero Jeremey Corbin lost the last general election. It felt a whole field of possibility had been shut down.

At this distance it's possible to enjoy some isolated tracks but it's still bound up in that sense of fall, disaster, loss, the death of magic. The reality principle taking its grim revenge.

It's grim out there today, so here's some fake sunshine:

This reminds me of 20 years ago: the cusp-of-the-21st Century cocoon.

This is not an intricate production by the standards of Todd, but it's a good showcase for his melodic gift. The ripples and switches are addictive and synthetic and prompt an artificial rush of joy, which is no worse for being so. It's as purely Pavlovian as anything outside of hardcore.

wu tang forever also works within a certain late-90's ugliness that can be found in the matrix clothing and the video to prodigy's breathe.

david fincher aesthetics but redeemed with a light afro-futurist tinge.
