the joke could have worked just as well, for the exact same reasons if he'd said zadie smith being black just makes her more anglo. it's a similar phenomenon

or that muslim woman who won great british bake off. could have used the same joke formula with her being muslim making her more anglo.

it's about arty middle class people's fetishising of the exotic Other, but ironically only liking the Other when they do very white, middle class-friendly things (make music that sounds like crumpling paper/write middle brow novels/bake cakes)

it's that tiredness you feel after a good night out. a nice tiredness. that point in the evening you all get a bit snuggy with each other. the girl leans on your shoulder. nice warm room of a house party. eating stale doritos from a bowl and them hitting the spot perfectly.

Ok barty is talking about a different thing. Barty is immersed, version is anticipating. I’m cancelling a taxi. I think I associate it bad Friday night radio, the idea of a good time when I’m not having one. I dunno I’d ive actually heard it in clubs that much

I was at a party back in January when they played "music sounds better" at peak time, and it was fucking perfect, everybody dancing. it's boiled down to the essence, looped over and over.

what's so special about that one is that it distills so perfectly what music's supposed to do. what music's done since at least elvis. it's got only 2 missions 1) to make a noise that perplexes/annoys your parents and 2) signify that you are black at your heart.

that is the root of all proper music. from elvis, through rock, through acid house and so on. it's an important and enduring societal phenomena. the maintenance of western civilisation depends on it.
