  • So Lovecraft was a racist, but is still not quite cancelled?
  • R Kelly, the paedo/sex abuser, cancelled? I would still like to be able to hear his tunes, but i don't think it's allowed now
  • MJ likewise, but his tunes are canonical?
  • Conrad was a bit racist too, but is not cancelled, afaik
  • I personally cancelled Tea for racist outbursts
  • Weinstein - i guess there should be a list of movies that he made that we should avoid
  • but Woodie Allen, is he on his way to rehabilitation now?
  • our own Nina, could we rehabilitate her? How??

It's not black and white, is it? and i'm definitely not arguing for these beasts,
obviously there are all kinds of factors and complexities - the gravity of the offence - was it just words or was it actions? was it a crime? did they do the time? Did they apologise? who suffered?
how far back was it? how much water has passed under the bridge? how have our attitudes changed since?

Should we have a consistent reaction, or is there space fot personal subjectivity? Are some cancellations undermined by our own prejudices?

How come our puritanical impulses have deepened in some respects but not others? How does Boris sail through?

So many questions,
Can we have a policy clarification, please, or at least some robust guidance

why is woody allen uncanceled?

That's interesting, I've never heard anyone use that particular defence. In my experience people just sort of tend to glaze over and then move on and vote for him anyway.

it was a big one on the radio phone ins

similar to the one where "we were all actually starting to get along" before me too was invented

Is that racist?

No, but I imagine it would fall under prejudice. The point is he thought anyone who didn't adhere to his incredibly rigid view of what a person should be was inferior and that his view was even more rigid than a lot of the out and out racists of his time.

I think the unsatisfying and unsettling answer is people can forgive, or at least look past, basically anything and it's entirely dependent on a shit load of variables that are impossible to quantify. Also it definitely helps someone's case if they're known and appreciated for something other than whatever it is they're accused of, e.g. William Burroughs is the writer who also shot his wife as opposed to the possible murderer who also wrote some books.

"well i separate the art from the artist" often said by the same people as "the builders have done a great job on the extension but i just pray they dont mention brexit"

I like all sorts of wrong 'uns to be fair

We talked about this a bit in the Nova thread,

I've noticed there are some terrible people who are sort of likeable and who I have to remind myself of how terrible they are and some where it just isn't an issue, even if I like their work, because I just don't like them. Burroughs would be an example of the former, Celine and Henry Miller the latter.

Yeah. Racist and a snob I suppose.

even if someone has acted as a completely neutral channel for the spirits of infinity to write a book, they've been chosen particularly. with someone like him the writing has come in the wake of a pretty huge deal scenario in his life, its intertwined with it, its not the only way of looking at it and it hasn't got the final judgment on whether you junk it or not but its got to be an ingredient you can detect.

I really like Polanski's films, I think I said I watched through them all (or nearly) again recently and several of them are truly unique and brilliant.
That said, I do not understand how the fuck he is given the leeway he is. He drugged and forcibly sodomised an underage girl and then fled the fucking country before the judge could pass sentence. And he's still going to Cannes or whatever. I guess that now is a different time as well.

Polanski's baffling tbh. He's still alive. Everyone knows about it. He's still releasing films, still has Hollywood stars working with him, still receives awards. Obviously he's had an incredibly traumatising life, but still...

possibly naively i think i think i can just have my cake and eat it with this really, its great when someone who did something brilliant is a complete cunt because you never get intimidated by them

villains and also scapegoats. I'm trying to think if there's anyone I've cancelled. I don't really think so. Like I say I like all sorts of wrong 'uns. I probably don't really give a shit.

The Smiths fans don't burn their records cos morrisey is a dickhead do they. They'd rather he wasn't but what can you do
