It's good to read things which are too difficult for you. It's like taking a cold shower or doing 12 swift star jumps or eating your broccoli.

I've started wondering about this lately.

I think the key is that you should read difficult stuff if it is also naturally interesting/exciting to you.

Don't force yourself to read fucking Hegel or something just cos it'll make you Mr Big Brain Clever Clogs Einstein Man.

On that note I started reading 'Naked Lunch' last night. Stoned as fuck. Instantly I was thinking Jesus this is the strong stuff, I've been drinking watered down shandy.

The good thing with Naked Lunch is it's designed to be read in bits so you can flip through it, pick it up whenever and don't have to feel obligated to go cover to cover if it becomes a bit much.

is not like other people
there's a difference between stretching yourself and staring at an impenetrable wall.

the writing i dont like is where they are deliberately taking the piss and making it harder than it needs to be: impenetrable walls with glass inside the hand holds

There's a clip of the Steve Martin and Robin Williams performance of Godot on YouTube -- looks abysmal.

Joyce is another one who it's helpful to get into via the earlier more accessible stuff - Dubliners and (less accessible but still fairly straightforward) Portrait of the Artist.
