extremely grim, even by the standards of colonial violence, so bad that even at the time it appalled other Europeans

driven by global rubber boom. mass forced labor, limbs chopped off for failing to meet quotas, etc. same thing happened in Brazil.

not unlike the devastation wrought by Columbus etc on the indigenous population of the Caribbean in the conquistadors' mad lust for gold.
There's been a photo doing the rounds recently of some guy staring at the dismembered foot of his child. As a father (or just a fucking human) this sends a shudder of horror through me. Unbelievable really. Only it happened on an industrial scale.

creating fake racial categories to divide and conquer was a common colonial tactic

it was a direct cause of the Rwandan genocide. it's debated to what extent, but "Hutu" and "Tutsi" are mostly bullshit categories made up by the Belgians.

i.e. when doing the census, they recorded anyone with certain features (long neck, narrow nose, etc) or having wealth (cattle) as "Tutsi"

then they heavily favored the "Tutsi" as a colonial ruling class, fostering mass resentment by "Hutus". with predicable results.

Tutsi/Hutu tension and post-genocide fallout was also a big contributor to the Great Lakes War aka the African World War, which killed 5+ million, tho that clusterfuck had many causes

And this btw is why every right thinking person should shun the works of William Bennett
oh yeah fuck that guy

I remember zhao of all people defending him years ago, and citing the Cut Hands liner notes to him

I'd forgotten Blackest Ever Black put out most of that. I guess they also had that sub-Bennet/Muslimgauze edgelord Dominick Fernow.

who, looking it up, actually put out a concept record about Belgian colonial brutality! as Force Publique Congo - the actual name of Leopold II's private slave overseer force/army - the guys who actually chopped off all those limbs. what in the actual fuck.

amazing. you couldn't make up the edginess of this bullshit if you tried.

Congo situation was so bad that the UK govt sent Roger Casement to investigate in the name of human rights. in 1903. which should tell you something.

of all the statues coming down, Leopold II is surely among the most deserving
The Sven Lindqvist book Exterminate All The Brutes is excellent on all this - showing how the Heart of Darkness comes out the racial science of the nineteenth century where the fantasies are not merely of white superiority but of actual extermination—“cleansing” the earth of the so-called lesser races—deeply informed European colonialism and racist ideology.

thanks for these rcommendations and details - the show I was referring to didn't go into massive detail but the Tutsi/Hutu divide is exactly what I was thinking of

Amazing how we still exercise this disembodied horror to current and recent atrocities in Congo, also carried out in on our behalf :(

it all started for RA when, hilariously, thirdform started a thing on twitter about how an article they published on jungle was racist. they've been in a panicked tailspin ever since.

The Ego of Activism, Fri 24 July:Renegade academic and ethnopsychotherapeutic researcher Bayo Akomolafe and social change pioneer Ronan Harrington discuss the highly polarized nature of today's activism - including Cancel Culture, Karens and JK Rowling… This talk is part of our ongoing Ego of Activism Series - an enquiry into the wounds, traumas, limiting beliefs and primal desires that animate this collective ego and how to playfully disarm it.

One of Brazil’s most-followed rappers, Emicida, argued, sensibly, that he wouldn’t be demonstrating because, “we need to be strategic not emotional…, we’re not organized enough right now.” Greater state repression in response would fall hardest on the black and poor. When a left-wing influencer retorted (condescendingly) that Emicida obviously hadn’t read Rosa Luxemburg on the mass strike, it led to “Rosa Luxemburgo” trending in the country. Instead of a much-needed strategic debate about how to mobilize against Bolsonaro, racism and police brutality, discussion was overtaken by attempts to cancel the influencer for racism and dismissal of the (Jewish) Luxemburg as a “white author”—all rancorously permeated through the prism of race and privilege, about who has a right to speak or an obligation to listen. The new US culture wars have gone global.
