62% of workers in that German meatpacking plant caught the virus. How can this happen if 70% or so of the population have some kind of immunity due to previous exposure to other corona viruses?

Deaths in the US and other places are going to start rising again now. I think the 2nd wave is gonna be much worse.

Masks seem to be the best option for anyone wanting to get out of lockdown quickly. I saw a study yesterday with correlations between early national mask wearing and huge decreases in deaths. I cant comprehend the stupidity of refusals to mandate them.

No masks in Denmark whatsoever. Very low death rate. There's a lot of timing (=luck) in this.

There's no 70% immunity anywhere of course

We need to get away from the idea that when you catch this bug, either you peg it or you're eventually fine. A huge number of people who've "recovered" have been left with major health problems that are going to affect them for the rest of their lives (lives which may also be considerably shorter than they would otherwise have been).

That's true: even I, with my mild case, have been left with an apparently permanent significant impairment in smell and my dry cough is still chuntering away, three months on.

Had been part of a COVID-survivors group on FB for a while, on which there were many stories of an endlessly turning carousel of both recurrent and novel symptoms heaped month upon month. Obv. major self-selection bias but had to leave that group for my own psychosomatic sanity nonetheless.

Almost all of the people I personally know who had it have recovered completely (they assume).

is this the first time you told us you had it?

that's cooool! where did you catch it? i dont think you need smell if you live in London. i think it mostly cancels itself anyway.

There are definite benefits to a weaker sense of smell!

I went to a few very well attended events just before the peak and also work in a very social job.

I'm habitually quite hygienic but once I was told not to touch my face, that was it: couldn't leave it alone.

ah. well maybe thats why you want everyone else to catch it? so we can all be in the same smell-less boat? is that too easy a reading?

I don't want people to catch it...I just think it's probably inevitable (as was implied in the 'flatten the curve' plan that merely redistributed the deaths)

I wasn't going all out to avoid it... This was partly because I estimated the IFR at 0.15% from the Wuhan data and also because there was no apparent risk of long-term unpleasantness (if things go badly, they're bad for a week or two and then you don't care cos dead).

Also because I like the idea of 'Keep Calm and Carry On' (Brits aren't entitled to use that anymore, I'm afraid)

If it had been said to result in something crippling, I may well have quit my very social job and hidden properly.

he lives in Ireland. a sparsely populated rural island with very few connections to the outside world. the ideal place to hunker down.

I think of this more as a socio-psychological phenomenon with some precedent, rather than a medical one.

The difference now is the sheer speed of information flow, with individuals being media producers as well as consumers.

Medically, it could be a lot worse.

Yes, that was definitely a lot worse.

That said, I think we would proportionally treat it with more equanimity if it came back as we've had it before and so is part of the natural order of things...whereas a weird bat-virus from a Chinese market that itself supposedly shouldn't exist is de trop

Shit, that's rough. Sorry to hear that.

I know a thirty-something woman previously in decent shape who "recovered" from COVID back in mid-May but gets wiped out after walking five or six blocks. she basically runs a few errands and then comes home and crashes out for hours. not sure if it will be permanent but not a promising situation.

If I'm understanding correctly, yesterday the US had more new infections than on any other previous day of the pandemic. So definitely not past the peak then I guess.... at least Trump weighed in with some considered, powerful and reassuring words that will surely convince everyone that they do have a strategy and that they can get this thing under control.
Well obviously he didn't do that, in fact he completely ignored this rather inconvenient fact, but actually that's probably the best option as every time he opens his hole he sticks both feet in up to the knee.
