I have a friend who gets creeped out by quiet suburban streets, even more so in the countryside. sees it an the tranquil veneer behind which unspeakable horrors take place.

no landmarks. just blank residential streets for miles. no shops. no buses. no escape routes. no one to hear you scream.

while you might be more likely to get shot or knifed in a city crime, you're more likely to get tortured and dismembered in the basement of a nondescript country home.

it's not even that im afraid of. my nightmare is that it closes in on you like a web and you have to stay there forever.

Well suburbs are another thing altogether, aren't they. "Liminal spaces". Neither of the city, to which they append, nor of the countryside, to which they aspire.

The Street and the Road give way to the Close and the Gardens, and in the rows of numbered bungalows and houselets there's always one which has been given a name as well, which is always either Sunnymeade or Fairholme.

Actually i think this is important. We are supposed to hold Ballard in high regard here aren't we? Tea is right. We need a new poll: the suburbs vs _______ (not sure actually, the city?)

don't do a poll. but start a thread if there's not one already. most people here are suburban and probably have some interesting things to say.

There's probably at least one middle-aged couple into S&M or swinging or something in every suburb. Tony and Pam in their leather.

There is actually a shadowy Ministry of Stereotypes that ensures that this is always the case.

It's very hush-hush and I've probably endangered my life just by mentioning it.

the coast is interesting. historically its been the location of those at the edge of society, people tend to be pushed out there if they don't fit.

The most deprived areas in Britain are on the coast. The wealthiest areas in America are on the coast.
