This one’s for @WebEschatology because it’s got a swinging hippy cock n balls in full view

Looks like a thread’s been created where 2 or 3 people are thinking ‘sweet’, while a myriad of mind rapists lurk in the bushes with word hammers. To quote Chief Dan George, I’ll ‘endeavour to persevere’.

Same set up with the house thread. Most of us will hate and fear it but don't let that stop you.

Hawkwind were their own unique realm of genius for a few lp's before falling away mid 70's, but not even close to the Dead in terms of sheer musicianship.

edit - This is bog standard Dead, a tune played so many times end of sets, I usually skip it. Then i found the above just in the last week. It starts off as per, then gears shift and goes in an entirely fresh direction. Best served with breakfast.

I’ve been listening to those Jerry/Merl Saunders shows from 72/73 - the band are something else and those long expansive blues/jazz grooves are mesmeric. Their versions of Second That Emotion stand out in particular.

Merl Saunders sets have so much to offer the ears. My fridge has a list of show soundboards (Betty Cantor-Jackson thank you!) with dates to remember due to being headshot. Second That Emotion is home run material throughout the early 70's into Legion of Mary and later JGB line-ups. Outstanding renditions, dare i say stonking.

Keep coming back to this, *ratings per track. Lonely Avenue is simply tremendous

No I haven’t, will poke around. Got through Dark Star by Rob Greenfield, the LST text by McNally and Conversations by David Gans. The latter’s a bit crap but wife gave me Drumming at the Edge of Magic a few years ago which is superb (for any drummers out there too!).

Good to see someone else drool over Merl era collaborations. The Howard Wales Side Trips thing isn’t anywhere near as consistent in my humble opinion, still one or two cuts that kick. Saunders has such a rich sound, bit like a rhythm guitar sometimes. He’s all over The Twilight Zone tv sounds too. That batch of show soundboards of Saunders and Garcia you cited from the early 70’s are distilled gold. Betty Cantor-Jackson‘s work is worth a few PhD’s.

Think I’m really lucky in that my Dad was a record freak, Incredible String Band side of Wedgieland, so not many Brits get exposed to the Dead beyond the sketchy wakadoodle image. Was due to see Tom Constanten in March, then the killer sneeze blew in. Keep dropping favourites. Think we’re beyond radicalising the board ;)
