The spikes involve <30 cases in each location (Oldham, Trafford etc) and could well be the result of increased testing (the fraction cases/tests continues to decline nationally).

On the other hand, Matthew Syed in The Sunday Times this morning said that these lockdowns are actually preventative measures targeting the greater genetic susceptibility of particular ethnicities.

Lots of smoke and mirrors...just as the government revealed that schools weren't legally obliged to shut, I reckon their definition of 'cover' in 'face covering' will be claimed not to require that the covering be in front of the mouth/nose, should any health-and-safety event lead to a legal challenge.

Hmm...PHE being asked to review the way in which they record deaths means that we're no longer getting a daily deaths stat.

Of course we mustn't forget to take into account all the lives saved by lockdown.. no accidents at work, no accidents in the pub, no accidents in the club, no road accidents and so on. I said that before but it was ignored.

The reduction in road use is a double whammy, actually, because of the corresponding drop in air pollution, so you'll see a reduction in the rate of deaths from respiratory diseases too.

Yeah, but how many...I doubt the absent deaths in pubs are going to compensate for the 20,000 (not that it even works that way!)

Yeah it is weird to insist on that but at the same time hand-wavingly announce that millions of people committed suicide every day cos of lockdown.
It's pretty obvious to me that "committed suicide during lockdown" is a weasel words way of trying to imply that lockdown was the cause when it would be much more true to say that they suicided with lockdown not of lockdown.

I don't deny Covid, I just cleave to the science and consider collateral damage, unlike the mad media and self-serving government.

Prof. Carl Heneghan, Oxford CEBM: "In the past five weeks, there have been more excess non-Covid deaths in the private home than from Covid in any other setting...Either we're managing expected deaths much better and they're not going to hospital or many unexpected, avoidable deaths are happening and that's now a real concern."

"I think died from Covid rather than died with it is an important aspect."

"In the under-50s with no comorbidities, there are so few deaths that you wouldn't even notice if you were looking at that group."

"All of the care home outbreaks happened after lockdown. 25,000 people were discharged in a rush, based on modelling that is shown to be inaccurate, freeing up beds that turned out not to be needed. That feeding into care homes just does not make clinical sense to me."

"We need spare capacity to have fever hospitals...our system is not fit for purpose."

"The wider issues are hugely important and concerning...the impact on educational attainment...highly correlated with healthcare and outcomes...the economy is inextricably linked with healthcare outcomes."

"What really matters [in the media] is not what you're hearing but what you're not hearing half the time. For instance, it's gone really quiet on Sweden recently...they're reporting very low deaths and their society has fully opened up...Tegnell was saying, there is no evidence to support their [masks] use. Much of what we're doing is not evidence-based and is knee-jerk policy that doesn't understand risk and uncertainty."
