Craner investigates...athletics doping.

I love these. Hi-Octane Craner. Sexy journalism. Brio, dash, glamour.

i met a photographer who has shot the Tour de France for years, he always said there was something wrong about Armstrong's eyes - unnatural level of focus. I think reptilian is preety accurate way to describe Lance, all animal cunning and utter base desire to crush any threat.
What was it they called Indurain? The insect or something?

every sport should have a separate, parallel league where all drugs are allowed, anything goes. let it run wild, no-holds barred, to its logical conclusion: insane supermen warriors battling it out, only way off the field is when they inevitably die of heart attacks.

Big Mig - despite competing slap bang in the middle of the doping heyday he is still invited back to Grand Departs - only one to win five in a row. He's never broken omerta. That pink ONCE jersey is one of my favourite bits of retro jersey kit.

I think we have the drug league already to be honest. Your average elite level sportsman is now a completely different species from the five-bellied couch potato who is berating their efforts from the stands.

Remember that Olympics - early 90s maybe - when suddenly China had all these teenagers who won gold, silver, bronze in ever women's track event, lapping established world champions and taking minutes off world records without even breaking sweat.

This is what I want the Paralympics to be. Cyberlympics perhaps

He was very likeable. Also known as Santa Claus and ahem "the brown muscle"

yeah but it's done undercover now, with careful doses to try and stay untraceable and sometimes certain drugs that push the boundaries of legal or are one step ahead of what the testers look for (I recall Lance Armstrong or someone saying cyclists were always trying new concoctions of drugs and then a few months later change again when the testers caught on). I'm talking open, anything-goes juicing. no testing, no chemical advantage disallowed.

youd be able to go all out if there was no chance of getting caught. bodybuilding and arm wrestling are already like this.

My dad often brings up a story he read in Omni about athletes bred/mutated for their sport, so the swimmers have fish tails rather than legs etc.

Gene doping is an outgrowth of gene therapy. However, instead of injecting DNA into a person's body for the purpose of restoring some function related to a damaged or missing gene, as in gene therapy, gene doping involves inserting DNA for the purpose of enhancing athletic performance. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), an international organization created in 1999 to "promote, coordinate, and monitor the fight against doping in sport in all its forms," defines gene doping as the "nontherapeutic use of cells, genes, genetic elements, or modulation of gene expression, having the capacity to enhance performance" (World Anti-Doping Agency, 2008).

Yeah... also it's just possible there are a couple of clean guys who would be like "No way, I've been fighting with one arm tied behind my back all this time".
