On the Spirituality of Money

The Eye atop the Pyramid on the $ bill. The status of usury not only as a crime, but as a sin. Islamic banking. The Protestant work ethic and material success as a sign of God's favour.

Edit: THANKS TO SHIELS, WHO IS TOTALLY COOL AND NOT BOTHERED ABOUT THE VALIDATION OF STRANGERS ON THE INTERNET, FOR INSPIRING MY POST WITH HIS PERSPICACIOUS QUESTION, "CAN ECONOMICS BE SPIRITUAL?"

For years I've toyed with the idea of starting a thread titled "On the Spirituality of Money". No clear idea what I wanted to say, it just struck me as an interesting phrase.

This famous monologue from the 70s media thriller Network comes close, though - starts about 1:40 in:

'the invisible hand'
'the world spirit'
marx and his vampires

the way Pound thinks of economics in The Cantos has spiritual and ethical dimensions.

the move off the gold standard, thus the value of the dollar rooted in, essentially, belief

Have fun, I've got to go to bed.

the link between the libidinal economy and the er, economy economy. i think Pound is treating them as basically the same thing and subject to the same perversions and dangers ie squandering on the one hand and hoarding on the other.

Any karmic or otherwise dharmic readings? Is there a term for a world of material wealth, a ____loka (a world of sensuous pleasure, kamaloka I believe, is one of the higher worlds)? The point being that your karma should it reach a certain threshold (?), can cash out and earn you an extended lifetime of pleasure - but that was just one of several higher worlds.

But we can also see a danger here, as @Mr. Tea mentions. If you believe that your material conditions are some divine consequence of your spiritual stature, then you might attribute your wealth to your spiritual superiority, no?

It's like an incredibly cryptic fortune cookie,

"Thirdly, as a result of these developed conditions involving the destruction of all codes within a becoming-concrete, the absence of limits takes on a new meaning."

"The role of money in commerce hinges less on commerce itself than on its control by the State. Commerce's relationship with money is synthetic, not analytical. And money is fundamentally inseparable, not from commerce, but from taxes as the maintenance of the apparatus of the State."

I don’t know if this is all true but some of it is

There’s some interesting cultural traits with money. Most large museums have a curator of coins. Imagine that. Knowing the minutiae of an early Kentish king’s rule from these tiny morsels.

There’s a rumour of a dirham that was found somewhere in the northeastern US, possibly a burial site (Massachusetts?), my memory is hazy. That would indicate it was traded by Norse/Russ across places like Baghdad and probably followed their northern-most trade and navigation routes over a thousand years ago. That’s still over a thousand years after coins in SE England.

Parentheses - blame Kent.

The collection and study of currency is called numismatics, which is tantalizingly close to "numinous".
