suspended reason you are trying to justify something to yourself and you are being dishonest with yourself to do so. You know that. We know that.

But again I'm not even trying to defend social media founders so much as I think knee-jerk "evil tech bro" commentary is intellectually facile, and ignores the systemic problems in favor of a scapegoat.

Like I said, that's the kind of "non-systems approach to morality" that makes things worse rather than better. It makes you feel good to be "above it," to not be "complicit," but in the end the net effect is to worsen the world, not improve it
How is just joining the people fucking things up improving anything? If I go join an oil drilling company and do the same as everyone working in the oil industry, how does my joining them change things for the better? I just become part of the problem.

I just actually happen to be well-acquainted with the tech sphere given its my job and (partly) social sphere, so I know more about what I'm talking about then people who casually read mainstream media hitpieces and rag about "data surveillance"

Doesn't matter. You're hoping your next employer does and can pay you a decent wage.

I'm not talking about people working for Facebook or something. I'm telling you why companies like Facebook are massive and make a ton of money, and why alternate models fail

in the grand scheme of things your morally bankrupt ethics pales into insignificance compared to your taste in music though. The real evil is bodega ///. This shit is minor.

this entire thread trades on that implicit assumption; a hermeneutics of suspicion is what undergirds the entire discursive sensibility

at least bodega is ambivalent towards technology, instead of regurgitating Orwellian paranoia

Well yes technology is a big part of the coming authoritarianism. I don't think its worth our time to painfully qualify how were talking about structural dynamics every time we bring it up

I dunno I think it all depends what your working assumptions are

My work on incentive structure, reward functions, surrogation, and Campbell's law has led me to think greater data collection is actually the path towards a fairer better world. There are certainly dangers of giving access to data to corrupt bodies, but at the same time, the data is probably our best solution to corruption. So there's opportunity as much as there is danger in this tech
