@thirdform please don't rip me to shreds for saying this but I still have soft spot for some of the Ritchie Hawtin stuff, early plastikman singles and first few LPs are cool. I know someone who was on Plus-8 and would hang with him, he was just across the Detroit river in Windsor Ontario, used to live in an old firehouse converted into a studio/living space, bringing cold white Canadian acid precision to the Detroit vibe. some of his slow-building acid jams still work.

forget about how he later became a globe-trotting rockstar DJ primadonna, early-90s hawtin was ok.

Totally agreed, his early stuff was great. Particularly like the Circuit Breaker tracks personally.

nah i totally agree, circuit breaker overkill was even played on old hype tapes so it's imprinted into my head.

don’t have much experience with richie hawtin but i’ll say this much: i’ve tried to listen all the way through that first warp artificial intelligence compilation on two different occasions, and both times i literally fell asleep while his track (“up - spiritual high”) was on. well not fully asleep--since the second time i snapped out of it when the next track started. but you get the idea.

second this. early plus 8 was amazing. two early richie hawtin classics ("approach and identify" - and "elements of tone" - with the latter wait for the bling-blong-bleep melody.)

kenny larkin "integration", psyance "motion" likeweise are classics. i interviewed him and jon in 1993 in edinburgh just before they went large. cool people. richie sat there in total silence and jon did all the talking.

So much authority and presence in this mutant bit of gear from Jay Denham. You think it's going to be a hard trance tune but no, after 30 seconds the interlocking africanised rhythm kicks in and your ears are assaulted with some serious grungey noises.

Never got enough credit by the deep house boys.

Although if you really want his best

Someone please get Jay to reissue this digitally my vinyl rip copy is decidedly average and this tune needs a proper remaster to be archived for posterity.

I fished all these out of the various London record and tape exchange basements for pennies back in the day

i remember picking this up pretty much blind in the bins and thinking, ok, now I’ve got something to latch on to, a sound to pursue:

febrile, weird, groovy, exotic
