Let's Talk About Ceps
Was just about to turn the oven on and other scientist mate has just sent me 21 page peer reviewed article to read, 'a study of cultural bias in field guide determinations of mushroom edibility using the iconic mushroom, amanita muscaria, as an examole', says I should read it so I've printed it out.
Basically this is going to say that Western countries have often thought of this mushroom as deadly, even though it isn't (unless you *monumentally* fuck it up), possibly due to ancient taboos to do with druids and whatnot ("but if course this remains speculation"), whereas in Japan the books say "edible and tasty if you boil them a couple of times before you fry them". (Which they are.)

There. That probably saved you an hour or two!

Actually not quite that, but basically yes. Was about how a lot of guidebooks have labelled amanita muscaria poisonous without ever properly checking, and despite the fact that it's apparently been used for food by a lot of different cultures.

Had a recommended recipe which involved boiling. Presumably boiling also removes all the muscimol though, which is why you recc drying?

The correct procedure is, of course, to drink the shaman's piss, because he's already had the best mushrooms.

Still reading Merlin Sheldrake's Entangled Life and he's recommended Peter McCoy's book, Radical Mycology.

Fascinating bits on training white rot fungus to consume pesticides, nerve agents, fag butts in EL, recommend it.

Yesterday we went for a walk in the marshes... I took the binoculars to look at birds but by the time we'd stopped for a beer or two it was kinda dark for that. Still lovely though.

First thing that struck me though was the bit that is being regenerated, and how similar it looks to places like that in London - despite being 10k or so out of Lisbon in the middle of nowhere.

The sign says "a new neighbourhood for living, working and buying stuff".

Always love a building that has been knocked down and yet still has a huge gateway though.

And I've no idea why there are these de-chiricoesque columns in the middle of nowhere

The marshes themselves kinda make me think of when Pip meets Magwitch in Great Expectations
