the more i think about it the more it does seem rooted in the geopolitical situation of europe from ancient greece through to the medieval age.
India doesn't have a particualry strong grip on the fantasy imagination either.

it's almost as if there needs to have been significant mitary clashes with European forces. Alexander went to war with India but apart from that there wasn't much.

the mahatmas.

According to the Theosophical teachings, the Mahatmas are not disembodied beings, but highly evolved people involved in overseeing the spiritual growth of individuals and the development of civilizations. Blavatsky was the first person in modern times to claim contact with these Adepts, especially the "Masters" Koot Hoomi and Morya. Alvin Boyd Kuhn wrote about mahātmās:[7]

The Masters whom Theosophy presents to us are simply high-ranking students in life's school of experience. They are members of our own evolutionary group, not visitants from the celestial spheres. They are supermen only in that they have attained knowledge of the laws of life and mastery over its forces with which we are still struggling.

There is gonna be a Wheel of Time tv series soon I think. Casting sounds stupid already though - Rosamund Pike is Gandalf and it seems as though cos she is the biggest star that the tv series will be focused more on her than on Rand Al'Thor the Dragon Reborn.
Also all the village yokels look like models from what I can see which doesn't ring true either.

well i think the first thing i'd do would be to insist against the odds to yourself that such a thing is possible

your list above reminds me of reading rulebooks for AD&D style RPGs as a teenager where you'd have different dice roll conditions for each of those terrains or whatever

further to the list

on board ship / starship

apocalyptic wasteland

cyberpunk sprawl

underwater

you'd look at the logic of dreams and how they juxtapose all kinds of crap and invent their own connections perhaps, take the inside of your head as a model rather than the world outside. but i agree it's difficult and probably impossible in a pure form

you lose a huge amount by trying to create from scratch as well. you lose all those rich associations which connect your story with all the other stories.
