The End of Civilization.

I feel like a hypocrite saying this because I’m one of the worst culprits for talking shit, but we can’t have the place descend into inane nonsense. The postmodernism thread was great, made me feel stupid, made me go pick out some of my books for another glance

To those who get the sense that Dissensus is degrading: might it have something to do with social ontology of those who are more raised on the internet? I'm on the cusp of that threshold myself, and I can see how, a few years from now, assuming younger members keep joining, there may be more of a pronounced social ineptitude/stuntedness in the eyes of the older members.

It could be that the kind of luddism I myself advocate, the dumb phones etc, could actually serve to better position you, psychically, to adapt to the future. Could amount to taking a step back, rather than flying too close to the sun.

Appreciating the acceleration of information flows, rather than just embedding yourself in them by default, pressured by the socios.

The counterculture is always barbarian. That's the classic dynamic! The barbarians are free nomads, untethered... what gives them this freedom from working the plow all damn day? Because they plunder the cities for their food. Game B is always parasitic on Game A while also being untethered to it—in other words, free to take what it wants and leave the damn rest.

A sort of pirate parasite, interesting. How could that sensibility be subsumed by the orthodox culture? Seems like piracy is intrinsically negated by the orthodoxy, which would secure the oppositional/exterior nature of piracy/parasitism.

That is, the variable cultural orthodoxy of capitalism might not be able to appropriate/annex the ontology of the pirate freeloader.

You don't stop reading books just cos they invent telly you don't stop walking just cos you can drive. It definitely positions you better, it's only by taking a step back that you can get any sense of the bigger picture.
