Let's Talk About Ceps
not enough is said about how Facebook helped created radicalised fulminating centrists. Flat earth is marginal but gets all the attention.
I'm not sure this is a bigger problem than the QAnon cult, anti-vaxxers, Holocaust deniers, red-brown tankies, and a hundred other subspecies of unpleasant cranks and extremists.

I do. I think it's the most pressing problem of our time. And also, a tragedy. Basically decent, reasonable, pleasantly simple minded people gone feral. But I don't want to argue about it I know you don't agree and there are far more productive and satisfying conversations to be had.

I've heard this from a few people i know. a friend the other day, in his mid-50s, was saying how the problem as he sees it now is that where before people might have sounded off in the pub when pissed, then the next day it's generally forgotten about, nowadays cos of facebook and twitter, you are basically constantly publishing so it's that idea of receipts and the writing being available the next day, the day after, screenshotted, shared in contexts other than where it was meant etc.

snapchat was big for while cos of the disappearing aspect and i'm now using signal rather than whatsapp, cos the messages can be set to disappear after a certain time (and it's not owned by facebook) but it all seems a bit like not using plastic bags ie doesn't really have an impact. the box has been opened, we cab't close it or go back.

Yeah, Twitter totally feeds this as well. People screenshotting each others bad takes in bad faith, reposting them and rowing or slagging each other off. The Twittersphere definitely contributed to the Labour/Antisemitism rucks in a way in that it serves to enflame the issue.

Not just pissed in the pub either. People can make you angry anywhere, by what they say on TV, write in a newspaper, post on social media, or whatever. Before you'd either have to suck it up or inflict it on whoever else happens to be around. Now you can go and shout at the offenders directly without even leaving the room.

the demon "like" button, too. spout off in a pub, a couple of people nod, most don't pay attention. but post it on FB and you get affirmation, which feeds the next rant. doesn't even matter if commenters disagree, because you've provoked a reaction which can then be dragged out with replies.

I've seen it characterised as back in the day you'd have the village idiot and everyone knew they were an idiot whereas now all the idiots from all the villages can just meet up online with nobody to rebuff their idiocy.
