did any of the new Americans ever answer that question from a while ago? Do any of them like contemporary black music? Why not? Why do people like barty like migos but the young Americans like indie and 80s stuff?
I didn’t see the thread, but the answer is yes. Migos is great, although I tend to not be a fan of most of what’s come out of Atlanta the last couple years. Mid-10s chopped and screwed stuff is an absolute mood, although I’ve been listening to less because it doesn’t fit the quarantine mood. I’ve been on a kick where most of what I listen to is either from the UK, Nigeria, or SA, but there has been some great stuff, both soundcloud rap and R&B recently.

Most of my music posting here has been about the thin-dicked hyperpop crowd simply because it’s where the expertise on Dissensus seems to be.

I suggest one of you starts a thread on this music yoh really like, or revive an old one, and we'll see where it goes

Yeah that's true, let's see where we go with that. You can't just post a load of old hidden gems tho anyone can do that.

Although I see the need for a feminine voice is strong and I agree with that myself. I love hype Williams so much cos they had that balance and tension.

Also have any of you heard of baby Ford?

Belter of an album, massive inspiration to the ohtekkers

Where they are driving through the motorways and bridges? Yeah that's very memorable, the only thing I can remember really well from that film

Essential mixes are not such a thing now, but they were big in the 90s, the BBC gave a band 2 hours to do a mix, usually broadcast late night. There's some really good ones. My two faves are the Richard fearless one

Played it to death in my car, driving round in the rain. There's this brilliant tune on there, halfway thru, about needing your computer, but the whole thing is excellent

and this high contrast one

With his Roland Clark I get deep remix. High contrasts dad used to be shakin Stevens' manager.

I got brought up in rock culture where everything is about albums as a semi-indivisible unit, whereas it seems like a lot of what gets passed around in these scenes is mixes. The difference between filling space with vibe vs. more traditional "singular artistic statement" package.

I can't really listen to a whole album nowadays, although that was a strong format for me throughout my teens and 20s. But even if it's a band I love, a whole album is too much. There's a thread about it somewhere. I've been doing lots of versus mixes recently, one album versus another, one song each. Seems to be working. Keeps it moving.

The idea of thevd singular package doesn't work for me so much now.

anyway this seems straightforward to me: art is about communicating a message and the way it becomes art is through the tools and method of expression and consumption. Good art says something to you in a way that's unfamiliar and reshapes your perspective and interpretation, even if it's ones you already subscribe to. Bad art says nothing or says it so badly it might as well be.

I blame version. He lives in the American time zones and he brought them here to keep him company in the small hours, talking about baseball and Don De Lillo.

I need help. They need to assimilate to the native culture, learn to speak the language, otherwise we will be swamped and lose our traditional way of life.
