The pit.

I was saying to my mate woops just now I'm exhausted from the fags and the cans and feel unable to clamber out the pit. Then I thought of corpseys frequent invocation of his 'wank pit'. That's something about being sub surface and unable to get enough purchase to clamber out and something about booze, fags, wanking, etc that keeps, you there. I'll be alright once I conjure up the necessary bustling energy and self-esteem, but it's definitely a place we end up from time to time. not necessarily that bad a place, but it's all characterised by this subterranean feeling, very murky and torpid.

A diffuse and dissipated feeling, like there is not enough energy to make the atoms assemble and cohere into a higher self, an energised super structure of brilliant light.

It's the pits. Down in the dumps. Low spirits. The sunken place. A language of depth which doesn't connote profundity. Depression is a pit, taken literally.

I've spent so much of my life in pits. When you're in a pit you can't imagine not being in one. Action creates energy.

Emerson: “Our moods do not believe in each other. To-day I am full of thoughts and can write what I please. I see no reason why I should not have the same thought, the same power of expression, to-morrow. What I write, whilst I write it, seems the most natural thing in the world: but yesterday I saw a dreary vacuity in this direction in which now I see so much; and a month hence, I doubt not, I shall wonder who he was that wrote so many continuous pages.”

The thing about the pit is it isn't an emotionally stirring place. It's a place I retreat to to avoid powerful emotions. So it isn't an inspirational place, either, for me anyway.

This is why I've said before that wanking defines my life, as a sort of all encompassing metaphor. A self-involved, self-stimulating, naval-gazing, sweaty life... A null void.

My focus here was on mapping the terrain, rather than badgering Corpsey. How it feels to be here, a precise, conscious phenomenological mapping.

Actually reading a book or watching a movie or listening to a song can wrench you out of the pit. You need something to get the emotional sparks going.

It's weird isn't it, how everything can fall apart around you and you're blind to it and then for whatever reason you suddenly look around and realise there's shit all over the floor and you really need a shower.

It happens with your face too. It's why it seems we can age ten years over night. You go ten years without noticing anything. Life is basically unconscious darkness lit up intermittently by a lucid flare, revealing utter horror and degradation.

It's a typical trope in children's literature/fantasy that the hero is reluctantly dragged out of their pit by Gandalf or whoever and compelled to have an exciting colourful life. Maybe in all literature. Would be interesting to compare how often you get a protagonist who drags themselves out of bed and has an adventure of their own volition.

What you’re doing, writing is good for it. Taking the position of a loving observer and sitting with it feeling it describing it

I think this is right though. This is why thinking of yourself as A Writer, even if delusional, is the only way to survive life. Because you can always ask yourself, what can I do with this state, this unique place in the inner landscape, what is it, what does it look like and feel like
