but some of those elaborate dunks are all psychological, about sending a messages to the opponent. when Lebron slams one down right in an opponent's face and then stares at him, that's about dominating the other team and crushing their spirit.
Scottie dunking on Ewing, stepping over him then telling Spike Lee to "sit your ass down". Legendary.

I think this might be the best in-game dunk. Completely absurd. Green's got a finger missing on his dominant hand too, iirc.

my all time favorite tho is, and probably always will be, Baron Davis smashing it in Kirilenko's face

partially bc that Baron/SJax/Jrich/Pietrus/Matt Barnes Warriors team is probably my favorite team ever. v proto-positionless basketball, like a missing link btwn Run TMC and the Steph/Klay death machine, like "we're going to play Baron and a bunch of 6'7" guys, everyone will run and shoot 3s, no one will play defense". not very good but very very fun. and they really embodied the spirit of Oakland - where I was living at the time - pre-gentrification. anyway they pulled off a huge upset of the Mavs by rotating all those 6'7" dudes onto Dirk - he had yet to perfect his impossible to defend one-legged stepback as a counter to long, agile defenders - so they were facing the Deron Williams/Kirilenko/Okur Jazz in Rd 2.

the Jazz beat them twice in Utah but both v close hard-fought games so they came back to a raucous Oracle for game 3 and the Warriors just dusted them. and Baron when threw this absolute insanity down on AK-47 - possibly the best shot-blocker in the league at the time - just pandemonium. I was watching in a bar in Fruitvale and again, everyone lost their minds. people were literally speechless. another of my most cherished sports memories. the Jazz finished them off pretty soundly after that but really who cares? no one remembers a random Jazz team that lost in the Conference Finals in 2007 while this dunk lives on forever.

they don't show it in that clip but another perfect detail is Stephen Jackson dusting the imaginary dust off Baron's shoulders right after he untucks his shirt. it's such an SJax thing to do - if ever there was a dude who gave zero fucks about propriety it was Stephen Jackson. if I remember right one or maybe both of them got technicals.

also nothing symbolizes the Bay's transformation to me like the Warriors moving from Oakland to SF. really just a bygone era.

What happened to Deron Williams? I was playing NBA 2K11 recently and he was ridiculous. He seemed to just drop off a cliff.

Its ok, basketball starts in december and Ill need an amercian contingency on here. we'll whip you into shape. Youll love it, analytics are huge. it can be the tennis to your dfw.

Watched my whole life! I still remember those early 2000s LA rings, would go to the local bar and grill as a kid.

But what's wrong with my football analogy obviously it's not how the game's actually played but I don't think I mangled the general structure

It doesn't work as a sport in the true sense of the word. There's no tension, no drama, no story being played out. But it does provide a context for feats of grace creativity and athleticism

This is so appallingly wrong, just shows no ability to understand and appreciate the rhythms of streaks, third-quarter comebacks, the final two minutes, etc

it just looks that way to you bc you don't know anything about basketball, the same way I find soccer (fine, football) interminably boring

This is one of the most consistent, cross-domain effects I've noticed. How much things seeming boring, monotonous, uniform is a product of lacking the exposure/experience to notice the details (the differences that count). I remember feeling that way for sure about country music, reggae, metal as a teenager. I hear it as a complaint about classical music a lot also.
