actually i wasn't talking about sarcasm, i'm always suspicious if they really mean what they say or are just engaging in their habitual codes of sociability

you're very friendly and outgoing compared to people in Denmark, americans always know what to say in situations, they have incoded system of massaging social situations.

well probably not you lot you're probably those other types who by american culture's logic of dogmatic opposition are extremely unsociable

this thread makes me not like the dudes

Dudes, we have got to step it up! The Brits are dry, sardonic, biting, fraternal!

we talk a ton of shit, though. lots of us like to hear ourselves talk, so we feel compelled to ask questions of strangers to strike a modicum of balance but don't actually care about the other person's response and often aren't even listening. just want to throw you a bone once in awhile in between our rantings about what we like, what we do, what we think, what we own, etc.

I have been reprimanded by multiple bar tenders, fairly aggressively, for looking too sad, and that was just my resting face. so maybe theres truth to these criticisms

I was reading something yesterday that claimed there is no more American phrase than 'if you have nothing nice to say then dont say anything at all'

I don't mind Americans. I like how simple they are. Very easily impressed. Have provided a large chuck of my income for the last few years. Generally quite sweet natured. I'd love to go there one day. Craner said they are so backwards it's like going back to 1905.

Would you say americans seem more prone to relying on these codes? Certainly wouldn;t surprise me, but then again I have no frame of reference.
