@sufi Nuts. 1.5% Neanderthal for Europeans, Denisovans in Asia. Later on too, blonde hair mutations concurrently in Europe and Australia.

Related news, Bryan Sykes passed recently.
you're talkimg about percent of DNA?
i was under the impression that til recently there was no admission that we were part neanderthal, the idea was that we were descended from them rather than a separate (but now it turns out interbred) species?

Most Europeans have Neanderthal heritage. A small Neanderthal population dwindled by intermixing with humans and competition over scare resources. 1% and plenty of disease

the other thing i found interesting was that there were formerly folk in western europe who were basically disappeared by us lot, later asian immigrants.
I liked a lot the hydronymy stuff you mentioned - maybe our only leftovers from that lot of residents, and nothing much to do with dna

Austin Osman Spare put it well in Two Tracts on Cartomancy, claiming that certain divination techniques involve the abdication of reason-based agency, yielding the decision to be made outside of the jurisdiction of reason.
Tell us more about this please, maybe in the AOS thread? Dont wanna lose the point amongst the fracas. I just finished the Baker bio earlier today and thought i really need to get hold of a primary AOS text so maybe this one you are quoting from is the one to go for. Baker dangles the carrot of ‘neither-neither’ and ‘inbetweeness’ ut doesnt actually go into them very well.

The trick, regarding the manner in which Yin (black) must reckon with Yang (white), is that it needs to be expressed systematically, and systematic expression seems to gravitate around the latter, being science.

So how do we begin to systematically express why systematic expression ought to be pragmatically and situationally used here, and abdicated there?
Woebot has a thing on ying and yan* in retreat, about how its been misunderstood. Anyone else reading that?

this makes no sense,
you slag off "saudi schools" "saudi funded madrassas" for being islamic fundamentalists when you know fuck all about it :( it's disgusting
I'm not making this stuff up! It's a matter of record.

In October 2012, Robert Bernstein, who founded Human Rights Watch, serves as a chairman of Advancing Human Rights, and was a former chairman and CEO of Random House, and various other book publishers, expressed their "profound disappointment that the Saudi government continues to print textbooks inciting hatred and violence against religious minorities." They gave an example of an 8th grade textbook which writes, "The Apes are the people of the Sabbath, the Jews; and the Swine are the infidels of the communion of Jesus, the Christians." The publishers explained that "hate speech is the precursor to genocide. First you get to hate and then you kill."[7]

According to the Anti-Defamation League’s November 2018 report, Saudi government-published school textbooks for the 2018-19 academic year promoting incitement to hatred or violence against Jews, Christians, women, and homosexual men,[8] despite the kingdom’s claims to the contrary.[9] One of the examples read, “The hour will not come until Muslims fight the Jews, so that the Muslims kill them, until the Jew hides behind rock and tree, so the rock or the tree says: ‘Oh Muslim, oh servant of God, this Jew is behind me, so kill him.’” Another passage also suggested that “beating [women] is permitted when necessary.”[10]

You're now claiming that objecting to racism is itself racist, just because the racists in this case are Muslims. Note that I haven't made a blanket statement about Islam, or about Muslims, or even about Saudi Arabia as a whole. I've made a claim about what is taught in schools there. And it's true. And it's not limited to Saudi Arabia: https://www.standard.co.uk/news/we-...es-admits-head-of-islamic-school-7189965.html

We wouldn't have these screaming rows if your worldview wasn't predicated on this extreme, fanatical Islamophilia.

@sufi The Yamnaya certainly left an imprint, but there still a 20-25% older population that endured through the Beaker arrivals. 4000BC (see pic below) is ironic because that’s the rough arrival horizon of Neolithic farming packages hitting NW fringes of Europe - Brittany (bit earlier), south Scandinavia, Britain and Ireland. Problem was domestication brought unique disease profiles (anthrax, small pox etc). When Bronze-Age Yamnaya migrants hit Britain and Ireland circa 2400BC (Amesbury Archer), there’s a theory they arrived in places that had already suffered a major disease outbreak and were encountering populations in recovery. That checks the warlord off the steppe theory gone rogue theory partially

Probably plenty of intermarriage as is the human way, marriages unite clans, but certain key monuments were sealed and blocked. If you block access to places of special virtue and appropriate others, you get fusions of change and continuation. We’re fusions of post Ice-Age Palaeolithic and Mesolithic hunter foragers, middle eastern agriculturalists , Mediterranean farmers, Steppe migrants, Iberian Celts, German and Scandinavian arrivals, plus layers of plenty of others. Endlessly fascinating.

I was reading on the legacy of Bryan Sykes, he was pre-beaker people in the history of this story. do you reckon that the theory is robust enough that it wouldnt be upended by another sensational discovery?

its so intriguing that this object, the beaker is so defining of this slice of european history and what must be left out - i don't think the function or aesthetic rationale for its shape are known isnt it? yet they are so widespread.

like those odd roman dodecahedroids - but even way less demonstrative

the lack of so much of the context is really eery

Refining Bayesian dating models is some step, as would recovery of trace remnants of vessel contents, really hard if the fat content is low. This gives you an idea of where the arguments currently stand

Tons of new evidence from around the Mediterranean on the unique chemistry of certain mythical intoxicating potions coming out. That’s the problem with pottery - people got stuck in models of morphology which opened up material culture to post-structuralists, whereas now there’s some degree of balance post post-processualism. Add the odd artefact that might get found on an alpine peak, like Otzi, which opened up vast insights (his distinctive tattoos are still a bit of a mystery)

Beakers make sense when you see them recreated in a hearth propped up. They’re the prehistoric equivalent of apex clay working at almost every level of society and, significantly, they’re deeply tied to cremations where the previous tradition was charnel ground skeletal scraps repatriated to the relevant collective tomb (ie non cremation).

That's such a shit argument I can tell you're not even convincing yourself.

If you think "there is some dodgy shit taught in schools in Saudi Arabia" - an objectively true fact, if you think racism, homophobia and misogyny are bad things - equates to hatred of Muslims then I can't really help you. It's a shame, because we really seemed to be getting on a lot better just recently.

This entertaining yarn cropped up in the timeline today, an intriguing tangle of dna based confusion
i really like this scheme of checking for isotopes, it seems like even deeper trace meta data is available than mere dna, and makes me expect that we can get deeper and deeper still, tracking the very vibrational frequencies into scientifical quantities
like the soul in every inanimate object
