Living in Isolated Places

With them or with society though eh?
well a bit of both i suppose. have you watched the one about the gaucho? it turns out he shot at his nephew, but his story is that his nephew was stealing his cows.

i mean some people are naturally more introverted and there's a bit of that going on, but the more of these you watch, the more you think there is some kind of root trauma event that has caused it.

dan price mentions getting divorced. dunno about the german woman.

if i'd be lost in the wilderness with no food i would not even ask that guy for help, even if i would be really hungry and close to starving.

imagine how uncomfortable it would be to sit there at the kitchen table, the guy just walking around with some stupid log in his hand not saying a word. better to just die and turn into one of those frozen fossils.

i visited a bothy when i went up to the highlands a couple of years back. my mate sent me this story about a guy who lived in one https://jamescarron.wordpress.com/features/surviving-strathchailleach/ and again, he was not quite right.

the actual bothy i visited was near suilven which is like one of the star attraction mountains, so it was really busy, but it basically felt like a prison inside. there were some little bits of graffiti from previous visitors and nothing much else.

drove through west Texas about 15 years ago, stayed in a few towns with populations of 500-1,000. it was great and everyone we encountered was fine, but it was also oddly unsettling. enjoyable, yet also so isolated that you felt a bit vulnerable.

Made me think of the Texan Style motel scene in Wild at Heart

there's definitely something a bit wrong with them i would agree.

the bottom line is we're all in this together right? (quoting George Osbourne - lol) but going off to the wilderness on your own that's not in the right spirit i reckon. it's like "i'm alright jack" (with my generator and water filtration and seed bank)

i thought this one was weird as well, a lot of these clips give me lars von trier vibes.

that's a good un. the man should talk a bit more though.

but also - and here's my point - off-grid? it's not a problem NOT to be off-grid - but there he is eating a huge steak! where's that come from? it's this myth of being able to be disconnected.

ive been having this argument with a couple of my cousins for over 20 years. they both live in NZ so it's more feasible for them anyway, dreaming of disappearing into the bush but they are always so sad and depressed becasue they isolate themelves. i say, you'll never grow engouh kale to be self-sufficient. this is a stupid thing to dream of.

If you do a tour from the western isles of Scotland southward down the west coast of Ireland you can get a taste of this life. Did near enough 3 months camping alone in summer, superb way to unheadfuck yourself. Wash in the sea, small budget for food and fishing. Post-Covid, if there is such a thing, highly recommended.
Wash in the sea?! Not the ocean, surely!
