Just to tie in with all the Ulysses discussion, this is exactly the sort of gross sexuality Barty's on about.

LENEHAN Ho! What do I here behold? Were you brushing the cobwebs off a few quims?

BOYLAN (Seated, smiles.) Plucking a turkey.

LENEHAN A good night's work.

BOYLAN (Holding up four thick bluntungulated fingers, winks.) Blazes Kate! Up to sample or your money back. (He holds out a forefinger.) Smell that.

LENEHAN (Smells gleefully.) Ah! Lobster and mayonnaise. Ah!

“You had an arse full of farts that night, darling, and I fucked them out of you, big fat fellows, long windy ones, quick little merry cracks and a lot of tiny little naughty farties ending in a long gush from your hole. It is wonderful to fuck a farting woman when every fuck drives one out of her. I think I would know Nora’s fart anywhere. I think I could pick hers out in a roomful of farting women. It is a rather girlish noise not like the wet windy fart which I imagine fat wives have. It is sudden and dry and dirty like what a bold girl would let off in fun in a school dormitory at night. I hope Nora will let off no end of her farts in my face so that I may know their smell also.”

The UK in general seems more comfortable with being silly. only natural it works itself into the perversions
British celebrities will say that in the US they get celebrated and treated like heroes whereas back home they get counted off mercilessly.

I wonder if we don’t really believe in heroes over here like in other countries.

Our aristocracy’s notoriously ridiculous and perverted and scandalous and all that so maybe we don’t see anyone as one of the golden ones.

Which all plays into our sexuality. I assume Britain’s one of the most sexually liberated places on earth- it certainly doesn’t have America’s puritanical, or clinical streak to it- and that I suppose comes from our fundamental acknowledgment we’re all just farting, gross sex fiends- nothing more than that.

Im thinking were too aggressive and garish and masculine over here and if you dont set up those walls the silliness might be inevitable, but I don't have the data to say it confidently. cant really think of many other cultures with the same relationship to silliness

Europeans and Russians I’ve hung out with have all said that the British are always up for a laugh. It’s the default here, which they find refreshing as it’s not the case in where they live.

I see the American doesn't buy into the casualness of UK rap, or doesn't understand that was the point. There are no huge dreams of success in this music, we are not doing hype Williams videos, it's about buying goose in the corner shops and triangular 1980s estates. That's the appeal it is anti-gloss

seeing a british celeb in england like seeing a drag queen out of drag

That goes both ways though. Bill Hicks, for example, was much more popular in the UK than he was in the US. DJ Stingray's said he has a much larger audience in the UK and Europe than he ever had back home.

Hendrix was the same I think too.

but I’m not sure those lot were marketing themselves as stars. As the golden people. Maybe quite the opposite- hence why the British appreciated it .

there's a Kirstin O'Brien quote where she talks about knowing that every straight man she meets of a certain age has definitely tried to have a wank over her at some point
