The variety of emotions and feelings which have arisen in this thread - from John's community orientated concerns to Tea's Little Englander NIMBYism - is a good cross-section of the reasons why town and country planning in the UK has always been, and always will be, completely ineffective at providing adequate solutions to the stated problem - it's simply impossible to address and balance the interests of all the involved parties and thus keep everyone happy.

This insult never fails to amaze me. Is there any other country where "You care about the quality of the environment you live in and don't treat land like an infinitely expendable resource!" constitutes a diss?

Once again you are reverting to a strawman argument as what you envisage as constituting my position is actually not what I am proposing.

Huh? You've proposed building new towns on greenbelt land, are you not?

I'm actually proposing we surround the entirety of the view from your stupid Spitfire shed pub with concrete tower blocks.

When I am in a thread about something I care about and I am having to repeatedly say "no that is not what I am saying" to different people, I generally reflect on whether I have explained myself adequately.

1) London requires more social and affordable housing but it is unlikely this can ever again be provided by current mechanisms within existing localities due to ever increasing exposure to global market forces.
2) Recent infrastructure upgrades in the form of Crossrail and Thameslink has created a commuter rail system which extends far beyond Greater London's traditional boundaries with a service frequency not disimiliar to that provided within the suburbs by the Underground.
3) Carefully planned and designed New Towns could be built at strategic locations along these routes to provide the much needed social and affordable housing with access to fast, cost-effective transport into Central London.

4) After months of harassment by the hoodies and delinquents who have taken up residence in the surrounding tower blocks following mandatory rehousing from Zone 3, Tea's pub shed is finally burned to the ground, forcing him to also have to move away from his local neighbourhood.

Well that is at least internally consistent, so no beef there.

Not sure it stacks up post-COVID though. What jobs are people gonna be paying £3k+ a year to commute into?

Or does much for the environment.

Don't worry John, there's always Deep House

Aye, consistent, tidy, punctual, economically productive. Everything you need. According to the spreadsheet.
