dj black low on the same label as the teno afrika. '9 days' been getting plays here and there

teno afrika mix to celebrate the physical release
'In anticipation of the album launch this Friday, Teno Afrika put together a futuristic mix of the most contemporary sounds in amapiano. WE REALLY WANT YOU TO HEAR THIS.

His Amapiano Selections Vol 003 (Skrr Gong Edition) explores the wildly compelling sub-style Skrr Gong that's setting minds ablaze in South Africa at the moment.'

majorleaguedjz are putting out a b2b balcony mix every week

dont know if i or someone else posted 'amatherapy: the story begins' in here by growzie presents, uk producer, but he's got some free remix albums to download and this brandy one is pick of the bunch

nice round up/overview/big picture type mix from DJ Pioneer blending the Housupa UK anthems with classics like Rambo. the one at 36mins is the standout for me with how far it's straying away from the influences into UK house territory

Antony Ranz posted a load of flyers for parties coming up this summer on his IG story recently. wish i'd screenshotted them now because they've gone and not sure they will be on RA or anything. I'll try to dig around for them later. 'Originals' is going to be back this year, the social distanced party in a field last summer where Anthony Joshua was papped. but on a less mainstream vibe, one of the ones Antony posted looked like a secret location rave (hopefully somewhere legitimately ravey not just a bit of smart marketing) with Supa D playing. definitely going to be trying to catch a lot of this in person this summer

me n the missus was loving these last night, pioneer is the silky warm up, kismet is deeper, peaktime hypnotism

scroll to mixes and compare teasers blurbs to the others, i get RA is tryna right their wrongs but if it's not with the same enthusiasm and poetic license they give to literally everyone else then it's just gonna come across as (even more) token-y

well, was really enjoying this until he wouldn't shut up about the plandemic and started getting really aggy at China

looool mad, speaking of, this is more deep tech than funkyama but ye, was playing a rip off continental gts show for months before he freed up the name

haha, would help if they had writers who were actually into it wouldnt it. following a few on twitter from the re-record pieces, there's some good eggs on there....

in the kismet mix, 1st one from sef kombo's defected-affiliated sondela recordings

@glasshand 41mins also, smasher

this is a different vibe to the London amapiano sound in here so far (maybe it's good not to mentally separate all this out too much anyway at this point) but this track Kontrol at the end of Zurii's guestmix for Scratcha recently was proper goosebumps business for me
can only find a clip of it on facebook

is this like 2nd or 3rd generation gqom at this point, or a new subgenre? don't want to be too broad here cuz maybe i just wasn't paying attention properly, but gqom from like 5/6 years ago or so didn't appeal to me as much as this and other gqom i'm hearing now. before it was more long held notes and atmospheres whereas this newer stuff seems like a lot more direct

like this as well for example

haha yes, i'm basically discovering south african music for the first time lol, where have i been looking...

dj ic with a housupa mix

'cold russian' out tomorrow, i presume housupa...

these are months old now, i wouldn't be searching boiler room and expecting to find ama. couple of other interesting mixes in that series, including bianca oblivion (with a track on dj polo's club djembe) and gvijin (ama-dancehall ep posted earlier in the thread)

Was going to say I'm a bit overwhelmed by all these mixes, what's a good place to start - and this looks like it could be the answer, so thanks.

That tune at 13 minutes is the one from that other set and is a banger - but in a really low-key, sultry way that makes the word "banger" seem wrong for it.

Grateful for the work put in here so far. Lockdowns probably got a part to play in this but this is the most excited I’ve been about new music for a little while. The log bass and snare rolls are just very addictive sound effects really u just can’t go wrong. The more discordant, sparse tracks like the ones in that do black low ep upthread are fucked. Sort of like that thing with Baile funk from the last few years where the fuckedness doesn’t tally up with how popular it is. Anyway enjoyed this mix last night https://www.nts.live/shows/idst/episodes/shannen-sp-31st-march-2021

what's the relationship between this sound and gqom? I used to enjoy the sparceness of that stuff, although i think you needed to be on kasa mp3 to get most of it outside of DJ Lag etc.

Never got into gqom, wasn't interested in the slightest. Maybe I heard the wrong stuff but I'm not really sweating it

Jawzy does nosebleed techno and wavy funky ama

my completely uniformed answer is none, lol.

considering this ama compilation is from 2016 and gqom has been around since when? just a bit earlier?
plus mfr souls talk about deep house as an influence, dj clock, bekzin tetris, in the doc posted above so whether gqom has come into the equation, i dont think so

Think gqom was around for a much longer time on South African social media before it got picked up at around (yes, 2015, definitely.) From what ive been able to tell it was quite DiY, no official releases or anything, untagged mp3s circulating etc. Will have to ask around though.

Gqom is still going but it is quite different now, a lot more melodic, some vocals too. Loads of tunes floating round the sites but ama is a lot bigger
