i like brass as a rule. what makes trumpets obnoxious for you? too strident perhaps?

if you take for example the trumpet bits that start in this song from 5:00 onwards:

it repulses me, it gives me headache, it has the same effect on me as fingernails on a chalkboard. it is what i would play in guantanamo bay tbh if i'd want to torture someone.

the squeakyness of the trumpet on sketches of spain totally ruins it for me. makes me shudder.

I a,ways think of miles and Coltrane as an archetypal dyad with miles on a horizontal axis and Coltrane on a vertical. Coltrane trying to bust through the ceiling and transcend, miles exploring the territory

Yes! That's it!

Also the sax is a more powerful and open force than the trumpet, which is quieter and more constricted, rummaging around in tight corners.

A good example of the subtle beauty of Miles here.
I Fall In Love Too Easily

I think this Jarrett trio version is equally exquisite

Tutu is right there and you boys are listening to On The Corner? Dark Magus?

This is what's hot on the streets of London? Vamping? Congas? Wah-Wah?
