I think we're in the late 60s/early 70s zone right now. High tide of social justice as the silent majority rears its head (NYC just elected an ex-police commissioner; crime and safety are the major concerns in most US cities with the recent surge in violence). Lots of people interested in starting utopian communities—crypto DAOs, Kanye's Wyoming collaboration with James Turrell, geodesic dome structures back in vogue, Prospera and charter cities. Trad family structures rearing their head.

Things have definitely moved forward though - for example it's not acceptable to be racist in public like it was in the 70's, gay-bashing is no longer normalised, or do you reckon that progress could be rolled back?
the violent authoritarian reactions from the state to protests about those issues feel like they are attempting regression, but not successfully

No I agree, I think history repeats itself but there's progress in the loops, things are different but things are the same, micro-conditions are new but the macro-dynamics come in cycles

The way this sort of thing gets discussed often gives the impression history only occurs in relation to the West.

Got a copy of The Muqaddimah recently. Apparently Khaldun posited some sort of cyclic history. I'm sure third mentioned it somewhere on here, maybe in response to Spengler as Khaldun preceded him by hundreds of years.

@WashYourHands e.g....... (1) there's a wave of sex-negativity rn in Zoomer TikTok, incl. pushback against OnlyFans, other normalizations of online sex work (2) in the wake of the pandemic, lot of online folk are forming intentional small communities + village structures of communal child support, resource sharing; (3) getting married young is becoming hip in elite urban circles again; (4) red scare pod-style reactionary conservatism

Baudrillard, The Illusion of the End.
Reading this now. He starts off by suggesting we've either reached escape velocity due to the acceleration of modernity and we've flown free of the gravitational field that allows things to have meaning or that society's become so dense with information it's "cooling" and grinding to a halt.

And they both likely would have attributed it, at least partially, to hyperflows of information that overwhelm psychic equilibrium.

That seems to be a major factor in both of their thinking (edit... thinkings???) . There's something very attractive about any frame of mind that can sit atop these hyperflows and be analytical.
