At this point, cuisine would be more fully abstracted, away from necessity, into a pure art, perhaps in a manner analogous to that of painting after photography.
Food is like the last analogue product isn't it. That guy from blur, Alex James, was saying how in the early days before they got famous, blur made a sketchy living doing pub shows for a couple years. And that doing that is impossible now. So all the people who would normally have been in bands now work in craft beef places, or do Sunday food markets.

I mean, I don't like blur or that guy, but I thought it was a good comment.

It would also consist of whatever conceptual associates have been made with that particular smell, and now we're off to the races of mystery.

this, in essence, is largely my whole point: it's not really in the doing, but in the associations connected to the doing. if you've had fun in the kitchen and good laughs around the dinner table, then cooking and dinner aren't just chores and a necessary evil to stay alive.

Totally. And I tend to believe we will continue to find ways to embellish our experiences even as they get more systematic and efficient. In fact I might argue we are compelled to.

woops

is not like other people
great bad food round up.

1> instant noodles. you have to go to the oriental supermarket and get the proper ones though. never eaten a pot noodle in my life. i like the pork bone flavour best, takes ages to eat and costs 25p

2> £1 pizza. you used to be able to get a 7" pizza for £1 with a couple of toppings quite commonly in london. real sleazy greasy cheese on a slate of bread. these places are still running but charging as much as £2 these days.

3> mcdonalds double cheeseburger. i read an article informing me that at £1.50 this is one of the most cost-effective forms of nutrition on the market. you can get a triple for a bit more money too now, i order it without the onions and pickle, yuck

cheese on toast is too legitimately delicious and real for this list.

people get deliveries so they can have time to spend in the gym or ride their peloton or do some other tightly scheduled tech enabled activity in their busy 21st C lives isnt it
that's how i imagine it would be based on adverts and lifestyle propaganda anyway
as you know luke, that's more or less what my life is like - swanning about amongst all that stylish furnitures and modernist surfaces and computer generated interiors etc

I'm quite fascinated by peloton, i was hoping that this article https://www.theguardian.com/comment...nsformation-i-have-become-an-exercise-monster would reveal all about the online community of sweaty socially isolated peloton bunnies - that must be a strange and interesting online landscape

Same here. Lockdown shut down my pub which also coincided with a warning from my doctor that I was on the way to an early grave as a result of my boozing every night of the week. I was looking like Shaun Ryder during the morning after.

With nothing else to do and nowhere to go I hopped on my bike. Then I bought a Peloton (Sam Yo is my man) and I'm now completely obsessed. I'm not quite as annoying as a Crossfitter, but I'm not far off either. I don't care though. I'm down 50lbs, keep having to buy new clothes and now fitter than a butcher's dog. Women actually find me attractive but I can't be arsed as they take away from my time in the saddle.

The Peloton is expensive and it definitely requires discipline, but for this 51 year old it's been a game - and life - changer.

good comment tho

Deliveroo and Just Eat clearly provide a service people want, but they also seem like an example of what Mark talked about re: capitalist bloating as they've just inserted themselves between the people buying the food and the people selling it. You can still get stuff delivered direct from pizza shops and whatnot, but these companies have managed to hijack the communication lines.
