Michael Mann movies are always sort of tasteless aren't they

I don't mean they're not good, some of them are great

But the fashion in them, the music... It's all sort of corny.

Remembering how the detective is dressed in Collateral.
What I found weird about manhunter is that it was very stylish and slick (music, set pieces, locations, fashion, mood, pacing etc.) yet punctuated with completely gauche moments. Like the director who did the former should know how to avoid the latter

Cant say I disliked it, I think I enjoyed it even, but it really teetered on the edge of awful. almost hypnotic in the way it tip toed along the chasm

In 2012, Mann participated in the Sight & Sound film polls of that year. Held every ten years to select the greatest films of all time, contemporary directors were asked to select ten films of their choice. Mann gave the following ten in alphabetical order.[34]

I watched Threads again last night, the first time since I sat down with my girlfriend to watch it on September 9th 2001.

Say what you like about Quentin Tarantino, at least he watches films that aren't mandated by S&S.

Beast of Burden
It doesn't scare you. It just unravels all of your sense of trust and hope in the basic underpinnings of society and humanity. It reminds you how close you are to nothingness: not just you but everybody and everything on the planet. Language, compassion, care, food: all of these things are a blink away from being erased. That the one thing that you would take for granted -- being able to communicate feeling and trust that this would be understood by the recipient - is something we have created and earned as a species and that we have also learnt to undo in a matter of minutes. I mean, you can forget all of this stuff and Threads will rub your face in it all over again. A normal piece of work like this might uplift you because what it shows hasn't happened and you can still open the fridge and make a sandwich and open the window and still see the sky. But Threads reminds you that all of that is only on loan for as long as humanity keeps itself in check and that these are long odds.

I think it's probably the most disturbing thing I've seen... the sheer mundanity of the setting relaxes you before the relentless onslaught.

The Green Knight

Gawain (let’s call him Gavin), well you know the rest. This rude as fuck green cunt rides into King Arthur’s court while they’re eating and offers up a ridiculous challenge. It has spectacular sound design in this scene, but the Green Knight is voiced by that cunt from the Office who does Drew Pritchard and ruins it from there

A mate thought it was ok. Thought it was ridiculous personally, Gavin’s journey isn’t represented with any panache. The Leek Hills don’t feature. Game of Thrones has fucked this genre for at least another 25 years. It’s an epic piece of literature, possibly best served by a narrator and/or animation, not cloaks and ridiculous facial hair. Import tale for Stan in that experience, empathy and temporality are a stranger brew than you can ever imagine (plot spoiler averted)
