For me this involves being almost unreservedly willing to guess my way past someone who dedicated their life to a topic. Their reign stretches only as high as their silo. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong, and I guess in a more informed way, provided I’m mature enough recognize bad faith insistence. Probe, digest feedback, recalibrate, probe, ad infinitum.

But certain foci can surf across other foci in extraordinary ways, whereas every foci manages to traverse others to some ordinary extent. D&G did well to express this in their own language from what I remember, which is hardly good enough. Something about how certain school topics touched upon other topics at a higher rate than the other topics touched upon other topics.

This strikes me a degree of paranoia similar to much of the great reset stuff. I don’t think anti capitalism is being deployed by anyone with the intention of absorbing and capitalizing upon dissent - I don’t think any such project needs to be deployed in order for anticapitalist intent to be inert. I just think some people understandably believe capitalism is ultimately unredeemable, and I think the only real opposition to capitalism is to not be productive, a praxis which hardly seems poised to make any waves.

I’m not so much interested in acquiring assets personally. I am interested in the process of acquiring assets, but I think I’d rather do it on behalf of a public agency or something that would allow those assets to be utilized by people who actually need them.

99% of what I want is either insight available through contemplation, or information available online. Paradoxically, I think this may make me a great capitalist.

That is, I think this kind of cultural criticism incapacitates and immobilizes itself. Congressional representatives don’t even need to understand it, yet alone operationalize some antithetical suppressive program, seeing as it poses no threat to begin with.

edit: typo fix from “Incapacitated” to “incapacitates”

Rather I believe that AOC genuinely wants to tax the rich more, which I think is a perfectly warranted aim thing to want to do. What I doubt are the prospects of that actually happening, save for an unprecedented intergovernmental progressive policy effort.

You think Amazon is facilitating the listing of copies of Capitalist Realism with the theory-informed intent of undermining any potential anti-capitalist praxis? That would not be worth the time it would take to even think about. Private sellers with more immediate concerns, maybe people who are theory-informed and may themselves have reservations about capitalism, are selling copies of CR in response to whatever degree of demand they sense there is for it.

It simply doesn’t warrant the all out, top-down propagandistic effort that seems to be assumed active across this sort of paranoid mode of societal analysis. I mean, that’s what seems obvious to me.

I think Mark Fisher voiced well the academic melancholia that arose with people who are romantically against capitalism but genuinely don’t detect an alternative. That said, such things hardly warrant the attention of policy makers and executives.

Which isn’t to say these people - the policy makers and the executives - see no value in philosophy or in criticizing the current state of capitalism, just not nearly as much as the kind of person who has heard of Mark Fisher would.
