Yes... They've cut into sage colonies, you snip a single plant with shears and the entire colony starts emitting scent signals, you can watch it spread. Communication, Version, communication.

That a potato will keep growing in your cupboard or on your kitchen table and we do things like skin and boil them makes you wonder.

@suspended done any grafts? Apple trees are solid for this technique

I could wax on for days about growing hydroponics but that was all some time ago, before feminised seeds and Cali strains

Cannabis is robust with cuttings. Someone I know kept a strain going for 6 years just from cuttings (no F1 alpha female needed). All the literature said they would downsize and hermaphroditism would kick in (which it did), but by selecting the more sturdy samples it kept on giving incredible flower. Now they’d all get daft names for marketing

Our best legal performers are dahlias, delphiniums, chrysanthemums, gladioli and various roses for borders. Repurposed a veg patch. Loads of fruit this summer, Mrs M does all our pickles and jams. Fuck it, save money every step

What fruit?

I have some grafted apple trees actually, gonna try to harden them this winter so they can go in the yard next. Winters pretty brutal so it's necessary.

Would love to grow some cannabis but climate all wrong, and making an indoor grow room sounds pricey and like a fair amount of work.

Summer fruit berries - strawb/raspberries (avinit ice lollies), blues and gooseberries. Latter you can get the odd double crop, best for crumble, take the sharpness out. Rest pick and mix as long as you water, bowl up yoghurt, honey and oats = easy zero cost snacks. Always going to lose an angel’s share to wildlife, give/take. Unless the’re city pigeons. I deploy a squadron of goshawks and canon for those cunts

Our winters have been milder last decade, which is like summoning a curse. Lot of apple trees and they’re hardy, bit different to Wisconsin. Supermarkets sell bs potted kitchen herbs and greens. Same way Whole Foods has wanky water sprinklers along plant rows. Grow your own. Fresh. Isn’t @Clinamenic an indoor greens savant? Small greenhouse on an allotment, bosh. Different options again. Root vegetables, take your pick

Cannabis can bring in an outdoor late summer crop if prepped in spring that should last a year, cured fully and jar well-sealed. Shelf life of 2 years. Stores as tincture, 5-10 years, technically beyond our own lifespan. A small hydroponic rig for indoors is straightforward. Read around back engineering the range of specs these kits use, fuck paying sums asked when you can source elsewhere and build. Large wardrobe is room enough to convert for a rotation and the US is never shy when it comes to adapting technology, so low cost option

Terpenes are a mindfuck. Differences between species. Their roles. Also why anything potted in ceramics means they’re portable, easy space for all abode scales and you can bring the scents for a chat. Peaceful work. House plants and shelf cactuses people can go off the deep end on. A geranium called Johnson Blue, which sounds like a Boris jk, is a blanket of pungent insane colour and something my old man grew. Staged a coup this summer and is still rocking. I like blow ins too. Had multiple sunflowers seed on outdoor window-sills, although this may be a prank or maybe from here

Is Wisconsin known for any particular plants?
Cranberries! They grow wild here. They're one of the only fruits that haven't been bred (the slow way) or genetically modified (the fast way) to all hell. American Indian crop. The first (non-indigenous) American farms were just gathering efforts of wild crop, back in the early 20th C. Largely run by Central & Northern European immigrants. There are only a small handful of varieties, like Ben Lear, and they're (IIRC) all either first-generation discovered, or second (e.g. hybrid of first-gen). I'll text my neighbor to get confirmation on these facts.

@WashYourHands Thanks for the info, very helpful. I have yet to try a gooseberry. Remind me what part of the Isles you're on? City? Country? Suburb?

we used to go ice skating on cranberry bogs in cape cod every winter. the water is shallow, just about covered the plants, so it froze quickly and if you went through, you didn't risk drowning because it was only a few feet deep.

Does Milwaukee have hipsters? I'd imagine it's one of those affordable big-ish cities that could cultivate it's own culture mafia, seems due for a makeover. Madison, surely, has hipsters.
