It's true I can't remember any of the names of people, but it's great how they all call each other Mr so and so.

I like how artful some of the shots are, like the one focusing on the anchor at a strange angle until the camera moves round and you can see what it is, also those aerial shots of the ocean at night. There's that great bit where they lose the wind and are all roasting in the heat too and there's an orange tint to everything and that dreamy score.

The stuff with the "Jonah" is handled well too. I like that their luck does actually pick up after he kills himself, but it's impossible to tell whether the superstition is or isn't well founded. It doesn't push the film out of the realms of realism, but it makes you wonder.

Might be worth going back through Peter weirs back catalogue, cars that ate Paris, picnic at hanging rock. I watched his debut recently, but it was very confusing

Picnic at Hanging Rock I've heard good things about. Classic colonials get eaten by the bush film.

The other one that this reminds me of a little, I suppose cos of Russell crowe again, is la confidential. And again, journeyman director on that as well, somehow just knocked it out of the park

Curtis Hanson's got at least one other decent film; I really enjoyed Wonder Boys. It's mostly Michael Douglas as a writer and English professor stumbling around campus, stoned, and getting into trouble.

He looks a bit like Craner in that one.

I like the parts after Aubrey and maturin have a big argument and then their next few interactions have the same trepidation of long time friends seeing each other after an awkward drunken hook up

The battle of wits between the two captains is brilliant too; the escalating tricks and surprise attacks. I love how Jack gets the idea for the final attack from the stick insect and that earlier one where they make a rough replica of the stern of the ship with the lanterns on is genius.

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
Picnic at Hanging Rock is very, very good – one of those films that use the sweaty horror of the outback to great advantage ('Wake in Fright','Walkabout')

I actually bought Gallipoli on DVD but haven't watched it yet.

The other one I watched was Witness which is also very good and gave me several erections. 4.5 stars.

I like that Weir didn't chicken out and give it a Hollywood ending. You want them to end up together, but they just can't be and he has to leave.

Only occurred to me last night that the French captain instantly turns this deception back on him by disguising that (lieutenant's?) corpse as the captain. Not the same trick but very similar.
