british films don't seem like cinema to us but i think it's thought of that way in other parts of the world the way we would look at european films like aki kaurismaki or something. e.g. mike leigh

I've heard the French think of Clint Eastwood in those terms.

In Bruges is universally loved including by americans. The Guard by that director's brother is also great

I think books, film, TV and music in general really started to go down the pan after the mid 2000s. I still come across stuff I like, but it's never as good as the older stuff I come across.

That's one of the problems with this GTA V. The music is painful to listen to. It's cos we switched to the simulation and the algorithm produces all cultural commodities now because there are no more humans

Also, I'm not talking about stuff made exclusively by young people either. There are older people who've made stuff I like who I'm running into the same problem with.

'In Fabric' was a great british film from a couple years ago. Really got under my skin and I had an extremely intense nightmare the night I saw it. Woke up screaming. That's a mark of quality. It's also really funny.

If you've read Oliver's POWELL and PRESSBURGER essay you'll note he cribbed it wholesale from what his bete noire Owen Hatherley says on this thread

Like fuck I did you bastard.
