I'm curious how the Tories will fight the next election. They can't point to their record as it's abysmal and they can't campaign on coming in and fixing things because they've been the ones in charge for over a decade.

I guess they'll keep pushing the culture war stuff and flatout lies about the opposition and hope the media help them drown out everything else.
Blitz spirit, keep calm and carry on, British values, whilst others prevaricated we got Brexit done, best vaccines - our scientists an inspiration to the world, standing alone against the EU behemoth, tough times - but you can’t put a price on Freedom, think how the country came together when Her Majesty sadly passed away, times are tough but we will get through it, think how much worse things would be under Labour, stick to the plan. Solid economic recovery thanks to dishy Rishi.

Yeah, they'll probably push some ludicrous bollocks about Starmer (of all people) being a "communist", like the Republicans do about Biden.

Basically it's that... we got Brexit done, which is the convincing evidence that we are the only ones to pick to make sure that Brexit gets done.

Hope nobody falls for that, but I'm sure they will.
It's just been announced announced that as replacement for the 100m Cornwall was due to get from the EU, the Tories are allotting them 1m. The response of brexiters is "Why does Cornwall need that money anyway?" - these people can simply never be persuaded by anything.

I don't know how anyone could believe the Tories would be as generous as the EU, although I'm assuming they had any knowledge of what the EU actually did for them. If they weren't aware of where the funding was coming from, how it actually materialised in the area and so on then it would be easier to persuade them they didn't need it. It's not as though the bulk of the media were providing that sort of information either.

That and some of them were probably so gripped in the throes of xenophobia they didn't think of anything else.

Well, I think that was one of the few areas where brexiters could make a fairly persuasive sounding argument, something along the lines of

"We give x amount of money to the EU and they give us some but not all of that back, adding up to y, which they allocate amongst our regions. If we keep all of x we could split it between the regions exactly as before and have some left over"

I'm saying that it sounded plausible thrn if you didn't look into it too closely, of course, what has turned out to be the case is that, we've lost so much money elsewhere from bexit that we actually have less than before for each region - but more importantly than that, the Tories have gone "fuck the regions" so regardless of how much there is Cornwall will see none of it anyway.

I don't know why anyone would ever believe the Tories would actually follow through on splitting it between the regions though, whether we lost money through Brexit or not.

I know. It's maddening. I'm dreading them managing to once again convince the public they're a whole new party whenever they ditch Boris.

I find myself wondering how bad things have to get before the hypothetical damage of a Labour government no longer justifies the actual damage of a Tory one.

This tactic of telling people to "imagine if Labour were in charge though... " is like someone pointing out your house is on fire and just letting it burn whilst muttering something about how an earthquake would be worse.

Yeah, when people say "Imagine if it were Corbyn/Labour" I am at a bit of a loss to think what they could possibly do that was worse.

Also, whatever you think about Jezza or Starmer as a whole, I find that argument particularly unpersuasive with respect to corruption... I simply don't believe that either of them could ever be enmeshed in corruption to anything like the extent of an average member of Johnson's government.

But I feel extremely despondent about UK politics. What with these kind of entrenched views that are impervious to reason and the gerrymandering inherent in FPTP I think the Tories are there forever unless they accidentally nuke London.

There's an article going round atm claiming the majority of MPs earning money for consultancy or advisory work are Conservatives;

It's totally believable. I don't think the other parties are squeaky clean and obviously I'd prefer it everyone were, but there are degrees to this stuff and it's pretty clear who the main offenders are.

What's the response been from Brexit supporters in Cornwall?
I wouldn't want to speak for them, but I'm reminded of the observation - it might be from Jonathan Meades, I can't remember - that handouts produce resentment, not gratitude.
