it's like they chose that word instead of delta cos they realised that where they went wrong with delta is that it's a word used in other contexts, but you need a whole new word to make it stick.

It's 'omicron' (with one 'n', at the end). I think 'Omnicron' might be a Transformer (of the capital-T variety, not the thing you charge your phone with).

It's one of two Greek letters with an 'o' sound. The other is 'omega'.

When we get an 'omega' variant, that is when we should panic.

You can see why they didn't go with nu, too:
"Who's named the new variant?"
"No, the nu variant was the old variant, WHO's named the omicron variant."
