never ever listen to any retrospective mix. only listen to radio sets and recordings from club nights and raves.

No, this is not true, as I've had to repeatedly drill into your skull. Retrospective mixes are good for the connoisseurs. Gus isn't one of them yet.

he needs to get a feel for the 'gestalt'. and the way to do that is to address the primary documents like a good historian

Completely agreed but can you not use the term gestalt? It makes you sound like a dodgy yoga instructor in goa.

this is actually very straitlaced and conservative by his standards

It's not. It's parsimonious though yeah. the weird shit starts happening around 2 hours into the mix.

But then again parsimony is something this forum could do to learn from, to understand how to interface with contemporary tastes.

First Gus has to understand the groove. otherwise 92 piano ardkore will sound like a mess of skittering clattering breaks and nonsensical chipmunks to him.

Ironically it is through techno Gus will learn to love jungle, because of the higher production standards of most techno pre-95.

jungle is the type of music and musical vocabulary you have to believe in to really get it. I believe in it 100%. But first the mind needs to be attuned to receive that vocabulary.

You and to a lesser extent me have never had this problem because it's been on the london pirates all the time, and we have clear lineages through grime, and yes, dubstep.

You have some choppy synths that go "dun dun, dun-dun-dun" like a million times and you some distorted piano chords that then echo the exact same rhythm on a loop, mayyyybe moving around a half-step melodically; there's some kind of chirpy flute up high, a bandpass moves over the mix to make it swell, there's a break for a drum fill before another goddam chirpy cassio enters
he's already reviewed jungle
