yeah. we've been polarised. you're not gonna convince me that Drive is not a top film with a masterpiece soundtrack sorry. i mean it's the exception among "oscar films" in that it's decent, is made with a euro sensibility, etc etc

ryan g is not the star. he's shit. it's a non-performance. watch the way he takes a second to answer a question. the star is the car. "if you want to ride", "it's in the car" all that stuff. the melodrama is deliberate but emotionally it works. the gangster characters are great. walter white is great. the shots of the city are great. the violent parts are great. the best bit is the music though.

It's an important cultural touchstone. You could probably make a convincing argument for it kicking off the whole neon-drenched synthwave thing that developed online. That and Hotline Miami. The driver's the archetypal "sigma male" people like to talk about now too.

more like defined the synthwave thing. also, crucially, the sigma male is a ridiculous cultural fiction and ryan gosling is a real life hero
